Good riddance, 2021. Hello, 2022.

The beginning of the year is often reserved for designating intentions and big-picture plans. For many, that includes setting career goals.

For those interested in making major moves in the coming year, Built In LA has rounded up a guide to some of the local companies that are laser-focused on hiring in 2022.

According to their employees, these companies are kind, passionate, selfless, collaborative and human. We gathered staff reflections here to give those looking for a new start a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to work at each of these organizations.

Cindy Hardi
Senior Software Engineer

Sidecar Health offers simplified health insurance.

Describe your company culture in one word.

Kindness. One of the core values of Sidecar Health is empathy, and after I attended my orientation this made a lot of sense. It rang true from the initial contact through every single person who I interviewed with. Everybody was very respectful, humble, kind, and transparent about the current challenges and opportunities present for the company. Onboarding was very smooth. I was introduced to my core team and they continue to impress me. The team is filled with intelligent people who are very respectful, trustworthy and fun. I feel grateful to be a part of Sidecar Health and am looking forward to contributing to the success of the company.

What professional growth or development have you seen since starting with the company?

I’ve been with Sidecar Health for 2 months. In that time, I have had a crash course on the healthcare industry. I believe that to fully appreciate the mission of Sidecar Health, we must understand what’s broken with our current healthcare system. From spending time with member care learning about billing codes to chatting with our VP of government affairs learning about policies drafted in Washington, it has been an amazing journey of learning. Before joining Sidecar Health, I would have had no clue how inefficient and outdated the healthcare insurance space is, and now I am so excited to be a part of delivering the change it deserves.

Lauren Mitri
VP of Marketing • SimplePractice

SimplePractice offers private practice management software for health practitioners.

Describe your company culture in one word.

Passionate. We are passionate about the health and wellness practitioners we serve, the clients they treat, the individual work we do, and the health and wellness industry as a whole. Every day our customers treat those seeking support in their health and wellness journey, and the passion our team members exhibit allows us as a company to stay focused on delivering great work to our customers and their clients. It also fosters a dynamic environment where we are highly accountable for the work that we do, demonstrate personal ownership while selflessly supporting one another, and consistently ensure we maintain alignment and support one another in achieving goals together.

What professional growth or development have you seen in your time with the company?

I’ve been with SimplePractice for about two and a half years now and it’s been quite a journey. When I first joined, I was an individual contributor then quickly transitioned to be the senior director of marketing overseeing a team of 10 people to now the vice president of small and mid-size business marketing overseeing a team of nearly 20 people. I’ve seen SimplePractice go from a practice management company for behavioral health therapists to a platform that supports health and wellness practitioners at every stage of their journey, from dreaming of starting a private practice to managing a group of individual practitioners.

For me, that evolution meant guiding the marketing group and collaborating with the entire SimplePractice team to expand our marketing efforts to be inclusive of all private practitioners, launching features that support early-stage clinicians like our website builder and features for growing practices like our directory for therapists to connect with therapy seekers. And this is just the beginning for us as a company. No two days are the same, and that naturally forces you to grow and develop both professionally and personally.

Leahna Purcell
Business Analyst • Papaya

Papaya Pay is a consumer bill management app.

Describe your company culture in one word.

Collaborative. Papayans work across teams more regularly than any company I have previously worked for. In our all-hands meetings, people from all departments and seniority levels routinely bring up questions and thoughts that spark innovation.

What professional growth or development have you seen since you started at the company?

I joined Papaya a year and a half ago in part because I wanted to hone my self-taught skills and gain experience working with data analytics at a larger scale company. Not only have I gotten that, but I have also advised on product launches and iteration, built out analytics and measurement solutions for entirely new business models, developed leadership skills, and much more. I feel great about my future here because my coworkers and leadership have my personal and professional development in mind.

Andrew Weisse
VP Lead Development • TigerConnect

TigerConnect is a healthcare collaboration platform.

Describe your company culture in one word.

Selfless. A great team puts us before me, which is a companywide value at TigerConnect. This value was on display after we promoted two of our top-performing business development representatives and onboarded three new team members concurrently. The senior folks on the team stepped up, welcomed our new hires, took time out of their busy day to help train and coach them, and overall functioned as resources for them. The senior team members recognized that the success of the new hires’ ramp-up was more important to the team’s success than their personal goals, and they acted accordingly. Because of that, all three new hires are now thriving at TigerConnect and the team is performing at a high level.

The team acted selflessly and all three new hires are now thriving.”

What’s the coolest project you’ve worked on recently, and how did it help you grow professionally?

The coolest project I have worked on at TigerConnect was building our 2022 strategic plan. This helped me grow professionally immensely by allowing me to focus on both the strategic and tactical plans for the business development representative program. Our program is unique in the sense that we work with so many other departments and have multiple dependencies: sales, marketing and product, to name a few. So in building our plan I had to work with key stakeholders across the organization to ensure the BDR program will operate at its highest level in supporting the overall goals of the organization.

Cesar Davila
Senior Software Engineer • Jaanuu

Jaanuu is a medical apparel company.

Describe your company culture in one word.

Human. Every employee at Jaanuu is passionate, positive and has a common goal to work together to empower or lift up the medical industry through our mission. Uniting around a common cause brings the team together and ensures everyone is working toward the same mission.

For example, the company was in a position to make an impact during the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020. Jaanuu rallied together to a common cause we called “be human” and was inspired to help the medical community and public by producing reusable face masks.

Every employee at Jaanuu is passionate, positive and has a common goal.”

What professional growth or development have you seen in your time with the company?

Working at Jaanuu for more than five years has furthered my professional growth by prioritizing my individual development. Both professional and personal development are major factors contributing to an individual’s success. I started as a mid-level front-end engineer contractor and developed into a senior software engineer, further expanding my skills with Ruby on Rails, Elastic Search, React.js, building an internal A/B testing platform and becoming a proficient front-end engineer.
