When jobseekers consider offers for similar positions, industries and salaries, company office design can play a major role in their decision. In fact, a 2017 study by Empirica Research said 37 percent of job candidates will accept a job with a lower salary if the company offers appealing workplace facilities and technology.
So how can companies upgrade their workplaces to attract top talent? AppOnboard and TikTok are two companies taking inspiration from their industries and users. For AppOnboard, that means planning to pay homage to nostalgic video games by furnishing the office with Nintendo 64 and Sega. At TikTok, artistic murals inspired by user features decorate the space.
Whether they’re stocking kitchens with the team’s favorite snacks, playing board games in the living room or hosting an artist-in-residency, leaders at AppOnboard and TikTok prove that a company’s office can be as unique as its product.
Social media app TikTok allows users to make short-form videos using creative expression. The TikTok design team said they decorated the office with murals that pay homage to LA and user features. Soon, the TikTok office will host users themselves in their new creator studio.
What inspired the design of your office, and what features do employees love most?
Creativity is the heart and soul of TikTok, so having a space that embodies just that and inspires everyone who walks through the door was a driving force behind the design. Our internal design team curated a beautiful space with purposeful colors, themes and designs to bring the joyful and fun personality of TikTok to life.
At the center of the office is a bright pink staircase that runs through each floor of the building. Following a bespoke mural designed by TikTok's design team, the staircase serves as the primary way to navigate the space. With our unique open floor concept, the staircase and surrounding murals can be seen from all angles, which offers a bright contrast to the calming neutrals of the workspace.
When designing our TikTok office, it was important to us to create a fun and inclusive workspace with elements that tie back to the company culture and have a strong resonance to our mission of inspiring creativity and bringing joy.

What exciting plans do you have for the future of your office?
TikTok values diversity and inclusivity, so we decided to create an artist-in-residence program that brings together artists from unique backgrounds to help us paint murals throughout this space we call home. We are excited to continue filling the blank walls of our LA office with unique and diverse work by local artists who align with our company culture.
This summer we are also thrilled to be opening our TikTok Creator Studio, a content creation studio that will serve as a fun and creative space for TikTok creators and partners. The studio will be located at our office and be used to foster TikTok talent and content.
AppOnboard creates software that helps users easily build their own video games without any programming experience. To showcase the video games that came before, Executive Assistant Brittany McQueen said the company hopes to stock up the office with nostalgic video game consoles like Nintendo 64 and Sega.
What inspired the design of your office, and what feature/s do employees love most?
Moving forward we want to encourage everyone to use the AOB living room. Our idea for this room is to have a calming and chill place to unwind with smooth tunes playing and a stunning view. Whether our employees are watching movies, playing video games, board games or cards, they should find this space comfortable and relaxing.
The kitchen is the most popular room by far. We keep it stocked with new snacks, both healthy and some not so health-conscious because sometimes we need that sweet-tooth fix. Cold cuts and all the trimmings will soon be introduced because everyone loves a well-stacked sandwich. We also keep our eyes on the latest yummy and healthy catering options around our area to serve at our biweekly catered lunches.

What exciting plans do you have for the future of your office?
Considering the industry we are in, I think it would be so special to have vintage game consoles in the living room like Sega and Nintendo 64. Everyone would appreciate the nostalgia! It would only be right to pay homage to the exact consoles that made us fall in love with gaming.
