There are quite a few compelling facts about the following LA tech companies that job seekers might be interested in learning. For example, the idea for restaurant software company Ordermark came out of a family-owned deli. Many employees at floral e-commerce site BloomNation are former florists. Teams at Your Super travel all over the world to source superfoods for their products.

And then there are the less tangible, yet equally important facts: Spokeo leaders are deeply interested in the health and wellness of their employees. The FloQast team loves to have fun. InvestCloud believes that every employee’s voice matters.

With 2020 underway, many professionals are looking for a fresh start. That’s why we peeked behind the curtain at eight local companies, all of which are hiring. Here’s the inside scoop:

Spokeo

People search engine Spokeo created an entire division dedicated to maintaining the company’s culture. Director of Culture Development and Facilities Rene Martinez discussed that department’s efforts to create an environment that supports the professional happiness of team members.

What’s one thing that would surprise people about your company?

How much our founders believe in supporting our culture initiatives because they understand the impact they have on our team members. We’ve created a team to provide white-glove level service to our staff. We provide resources that show our teammates that we care about their wellness, engagement and overall journey within our company. Part of that means soliciting constant employee feedback so that we are creating initiatives that are important to them.

We’ve created a team to provide white-glove level service to our staff.”

What’s one trait all the members of your team share?

Selflessness. We hire individuals that are willing to go above and beyond for their teammates and the company. Soft skills are an important part of greasing the wheels of collaboration and development in any business. Our team members are always willing to lend a hand, teach you something or even brew you a cup of some rare Guatemalan coffee they brought back from a trip. Our team cares about the community we’ve built and we all understand that we win together and lose together.

Customer Success Operations Manager Sana Farooq said FloQast’s customer success team emphasizes teamwork when working with other departments.

What’s one thing that would surprise people about your company?

It surprises people how much fun it is to work here. People might have the impression that our environment is serious because we’re in the accounting world. But FloQast attracts diverse people who love what they do and get to operate in a low-stress environment. It’s refreshing to count on seeing so many happy and smiling faces around the office.

Each department also has quarterly kickoff events, raffle contests and happy hours in addition to company-sponsored events like interdepartmental lunches and rec sports leagues. So there is always an opportunity to create closer ties with people around the office.

What’s one trait all the members of your team share?

We share a strong desire to help and have always emphasized customer service. In addition to ensuring the happiness of our customers, the customer success team also has the unique position of being in the center of any FloQast organization, which means we get to work with nearly every single department internally. Whether it be a reference request from sales or a case study ask from marketing, the customer success team facilitates it. This helps us own the relationship with our customers and build a strong lifecycle internally as well.

Ranker team members
ranker

Ranker’s SVP of Marketing Christine Fleming said there’s a “two-fold enthusiasm” that pervades the ranking site’s office. The leader said team members are excited to help one another succeed. And they’re just as thrilled to discuss the topics that the company’s 40 million monthly users find interesting.

What’s one thing that would surprise people about your company?

Passion has a significant role at Ranker. Whatever the topic — TV, movies, video games or food — we put the vote into the hands of millions of passionate fans rather than a few critics. As such, we end up hiring people who are more passionate than most about these topics and it makes all the difference in the end product.

What’s one trait all the members of your team share?

Personality. My team members are all really different, but really funny. Since we enjoy each other’s company, it makes for a nice team environment. None of them have the same or even similar roles but they all contribute to each other’s projects, give feedback and add to the end result. There’s a built-in transparency and accountability among us. We root for each other and the company to do well and we all win together.

Ordermark team working
ordermark

Ordermark was built based on the experience one entrepreneur had working in his family’s 24-hour deli. The online ordering management company has grown to serve the likes of Dairy Queen, Subway and Popeyes. CTO Arpan Desai said teamwork plays a vital role in the company’s continued success.

What’s one thing that would surprise people about your company?

It surprises people that Ordermark was started in a restaurant kitchen. One of our co-founders, Alex Canter, was working in his family restaurant and realized their staff was having a hard time juggling all of the online delivery tablets.

We all share the same goal: help restaurant owners succeed.”

What’s one trait all the members of your team share?

We all share the same goal: help restaurant owners succeed at online ordering. When a member of our team celebrates a win, we celebrate together. Everybody at Ordermark understands that we cannot help restaurant owners unless we are unified and dedicated to working together. Team effort is a priority in our culture. Without it, we cannot be successful.

Your Super’s teams have traveled to places like Germany, Ghana, Bolivia, Sri Lanka and many more to source ingredients for the powdered food mixes the company provides. Working internationally can be challenging, but People Operations Manager Savier Osorio said facing challenges head-on and taking ownership are traits team members share.

What’s one thing that would surprise people about your company?

How global we are as a company. Our team prioritizes being a global hub for talent and plant-based products. We never see boundaries when it comes to the growth potential of our brand. That’s why we take our team to work abroad in places like Mexico.

We want our employees to take responsibility for their wins and losses.”

What’s one trait all the members of your team share?

We all value the importance of ownership when it comes to operating a hyper-growth startup. To be successful here, you have to be OK with facing difficult challenges. We want our employees to take responsibility for their wins and losses because everything is a learning experience.

BloomNation

Implementation Manager Tracy Wall said employees at the online floral marketplace BloomNation are varied in their skill sets and backgrounds. But a lack of professional training in a specific area doesn’t keep team members from lending assistance to other staff.

What’s one thing that would surprise people about your company?

Our team members have direct ties to the floral community and small businesses. Many BloomNation employees were florists themselves or have family members who are florists. I think our employees are particularly empathetic when it comes to the needs of our florist partners because of that.

Having seen what both florists and small business owners are up against drives the team to push themselves. Every dollar and sale counts for them, so having a good user experience makes all the difference for these businesses.

What’s one trait all the members of your team share?

Whenever a problem arises, there is always someone to help get it solved. Everybody comes from different professional backgrounds and is not afraid to step in to help where they can. Just because your title doesn’t have anything to do with photography, doesn’t mean at some point you won’t end up assisting with a short info clip or helping a florist get better photos of their product. Having everyone focused on overall success makes BloomNation balanced in a way that wouldn’t be possible in a more co-worker competitive space.

We are made up of individuals with diverse backgrounds, both technical and nontechnical. From law to retail, education to fashion, our unique experiences allow us to brainstorm innovative solutions together. We are a team that believes everyone’s voice matters.
