Software for Organizers NationBuilder Raises $8M Series B

NationBuilder, a software provider whose tools supplement community organizing, last week announced an $8 million Series B round. Founded two years ago by Jim Gilliam, CEO, was originally intended as management software for politicians. Today, its use extends to other entities such as businesses, non-profit organizations and governments.

Omidyar Network, a philanthropic venture firm and previous investor, led the round, joined by Andreesen Horowitz. Gilliam says his company has helped campaigners recruit more than 280,000 volunteers to raise above $110 million.

His brief blog post touched on his appearance at the Personal Democracy Form (PdF) in New York City in 2011, and a speech that brought him into the spotlight. Yesterday, exactly two years ago, he wrote the following:

“This morning, I’m back at PdF. No speech this time, thank God, but even more indebted than I was before. We have an incredible team and incredible partners, working around the clock to serve all of you. And today, Omidyar Network – the world’s most well-respected philanthropic investment firm – is joining us. They are leading an $8M investment, along with Andreessen Horowitz, to further our mission of making everyone a leader.

I am grateful. To our partners, to our team, to our customers. Thanks for being a part of NationBuilder.”
