Trying to beat the recent heatwave might be draining, but finding a new role in the city’s booming tech scene shouldn’t have to be. All across Los Angeles, tech companies are on the search for new talent – and their open roles range from product design and project management to sales and marketing.

Built In LA took a closer look at 11 teams finding their cool as Q3 approaches and the unique company cultures keeping their employees engaged all season long – so you can save your energy. Consider this your summer break.

What they do: Hawke Media is a full-service digital marketing agency helping implement creative ideas into a client’s marketing strategy. The company specializes in creative branding, content, web design and photo/video production to help tell a client’s unique story in an inspiring and informative manner.

Employee buzz: “Our team has risen to the occasion and is doing a great job working remotely,” CEO Erik Huberman previously told Built In. “Building community is one of our core values, and we’ll continue to build, both internally and with our broader community. We’ll also focus on being what we’ve always been for our clients: a voice of reason.”

What they do: Redgate creates tools and products for the Microsoft data platform, enabling teams to improve productivity, implement DevOps best practices and monitor database performance.

Employee buzz: “I’m primarily motivated by the culture that has been built at Redgate,” Enterprise Account Executive Stephen Fontanella previously told Built In. “I care for the people I work with and I know that the company is invested in me because of the programs they’ve put in place, from ongoing professional training to office-wide activities.”

Client roster: Redgate is used by over 90% of Fortune 100 companies and many industry leaders like FedEx, Amazon, Verizon and Coca-Cola.

What they do: ServiceTitan is a management platform for home service businesses. The software helps home service companies like HVAC, plumbers and contractors generate leads, book appointments and take care of their extensive management needs.

Employee buzz: “What drew me to ServiceTitan was definitely the people – that’s how I always prioritize opportunities,” Director of Sales Development Melissa Lui previously told Built In. “You are the sum of the five people you surround yourself with, and ServiceTitan has some of the smartest, most ambitious, hardworking people I’ve ever worked with.”

In the news: The company announced in March 2021 that it raised $500 million in a round led by Tiger Global Management and Sequoia. The raise places the unicorn’s valuation at a whopping $8.3 billion.

What they do: Pluto TV is a free live television service. With over 100 channels to choose from, users can watch TV, movies and videos on any device, anywhere in the world.

Emphasis on collaboration: The product team relies on tools like Miro and Lucidchart to create flow diagrams and help team members get on the same page. “These tools have mechanisms for collaboration that allow us to provide feedback and edit documents or integrations with our Slack, GSuite and Atlassian tools,” VP of Revenue Product Adrian Chiu previously told Built In. “The expanded use of these collaborative tools tie visuals into our video conversations so we can iterate on our work before or after a meeting.”

What they do: Ordering platform ChowNow aims to support local restaurants through its software, which helps make online ordering, marketing tools and customer loyalty programs a breeze.

Employee buzz: “At ChowNow, we give all of our employees, regardless of their department, the chance to be involved in product development,” Chief Product Officer Emmy Yardley previously told Built In. “We find great value in adding multiple perspectives to the mix and encourage everyone to pitch us if they have an idea.”

Supporting racial equality: In summer 2020, ChowNow made significant donations to the King Center and the NAACP, while also encouraging employees to donate to 16 organizations that “share a desire to advance equality for all.” The company also partnered with a mental health platform to provide in-person and virtual therapy to Black employees for better-tailored support.

What they do: Beyond Limits creates AI solutions designed to provide human-like cognitive reasoning for companies across industries including energy, manufacturing and healthcare.

Employee buzz: “I really like how the work I’m doing is impactful, tackles multiple tough problems and significantly optimizes production pipelines,” AI Engineer Leigh Yeh previously told Built In. “It’s really exciting to work on pain points in such large industries, retain ownership of my work and play a large role in how some of our systems are built.”

In the news: In September 2020, Beyond Limits announced that it had raised $113 million in funding with another $20 million committed. That brought the company’s Series C funding round to a total of $133 million for its next-gen AI possibilities.

What they do: Fair aims to revolutionize the car buying process by offering a flexible, end-to-end mobile experience. The company’s app allows users to simply shop, get approved and purchase a car with their driver’s license and bank account information.

Insider insight: “I look for smart people who are hard-working and self-starters," Founder Scott Painter previously told Built In. "Someone who can thrive in a fast-paced startup environment and is passionate about what they do. Having confidence in their work and not being afraid to think outside the box are important qualities as well.”

What they do: Cie is a venture studio and innovation accelerator in the digital solutions space that works with both global brands and emerging startups, helping companies launch groundbreaking products faster and smarter..

Insider insight: “It’s imperative to keep a voracious appetite for learning new things,” Director of Product Micah Miller previously told Built In. “That’s why we’re always reading and consuming information on emerging technologies, testing new software and hardware, and hosting internal knowledge-sharing events that accelerate our understanding of how people use and experience technology.

Well health

What they do: WELL Health is a communication platform that allows patients to text, email or chat directly with their healthcare organization. It also sends out appointment reminders and helps users check insurance eligibility by combining human intelligence with automated technologies.

Employee buzz: “Ultimately, accepting the role became easy based on a few key factors from WELL Health: everyone was extremely personable, the product was viable, I was knowledgeable on the core development stack and the company was financially sound with a lot of room to grow with,” Senior Software Engineer Geoff Lawson previously told Built In. “The culture I experienced right from the beginning was a group of people who cared about the product and their team.”

In the news: In May 2021, WELL announced a new call-to-text feature in a press release that aims to help streamline the scheduling process for patients through better customer service, as well as the response time for questions related to healthcare. “The feature allows patients, who are short on time, to switch their phone calls to text messaging, rather than wait on hold, wait for a callback or just hang up.”

What they do: Mobile platform Route allows users to visually track all of their online purchases – from any merchant – in one app. With added bonuses like package protection, Route aims to make it easier for consumers to keep all their shipments tracked and accounted for.

Employee buzz: “From day one, our leadership team has created a culture around the idea that Route ‘can take over the world,’” Head of Growth Nick Warner previously told Built In. “The problems we’re solving and the products we’re building have the potential to literally change the face of e-commerce.”

Tech toolbox: Engineers code with Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, SQL and more, using frameworks like Node.js and TensorFlow.

tigerconnect

What they do: TigerConnect’s platform helps healthcare professionals communicate and collaborate, sharing real-time information and streamlining workflows for more than 7,000 hospital systems. The messaging systems can be used by a doctor to communicate directly with a patient, by care teams in a hospital and even by entire health systems for mass communication.

Employee buzz: “One of the things that really surprises me about TigerConnect is how involved with the community we are,” Senior Android Software Developer Cary Dobeck previously told Built In. “As a Santa Monica native, I really appreciate giving back to the home that raised me. We regularly help out local charities and support local businesses with fun company events.”
