Role Type: Project-Based Contractor
Reports to: You will work directly with the business owner to plan, design, build, launch, and support the website, translating business needs and providing content into a mobile-friendly, easy-to-manage online experience.

The opportunity

Our client, a mobile yarn shop, is looking for a Web Designer to help launch a new e-commerce and membership website for their growing business. The website will become an important customer-facing channel, supporting online sales, local and event pickup, paid member content, tutorials, and ongoing business updates.

This is an urgent project, with an ideal launch target before the end of October or in early November 2026. The client is looking for someone who can start quickly, work efficiently, and build a practical, cost-effective solution that the business owner can manage independently after launch.

About the Organization

Our client is based in the US, owns a mobile yarn shop offering yarn, notions, kits, PDFs, patterns, and educational content for a creative, community-oriented audience. The business is building its online presence while its physical mobile shop project continues to develop.

What you will do
  • Design and build a mobile-friendly e-commerce and membership website for the business.

  • Create the core website pages: Home, About, Shop, Tutorials, Blog, and Contact.

  • Set up an online product catalogue with approximately 50–75 initial products, including yarn, notions, kits, PDFs, and patterns.

  • Set up online payment options including credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Venmo where available.

  • Set up shipping and local/event pickup options.

  • Configure sales tax handling based on the client's requirements.

  • Build a paid membership area for videos, courses, and downloadable materials.

  • Set up private video hosting for approximately 10 short tutorials at launch, with the ability to add more videos over time.

  • Make it easy for the client to upload and manage new videos and update website content independently.

  • Set up inventory management so the client can manage product listings directly.

  • Add newsletter signup and social media links.

  • Ensure existing domain names redirect to the primary website.

  • Work with the client's existing brand colours, logos, supplier photos, product descriptions, tutorial scripts, and other provided content.

  • Ensure the website is mobile-first and built with accessibility in mind.

  • Help evaluate the most appropriate platform for the business based on its needs around POS, payments, memberships, private video hosting, ease of self-management, and future migration. Shopify is excluded from consideration, while Square is currently being evaluated.

  • Test the website and provide basic post-launch support to ensure everything is working as intended. Ideally, remain available for ongoing updates and new features after launch.

Requirements What you bring
  • Experience designing and building mobile-friendly websites, ideally including e-commerce websites.

  • Experience with e-commerce platforms such as Square or similar platforms, with the ability to recommend the best solution based on the client's needs.

  • Experience setting up and managing online stores with product catalogues, payments, shipping, pickup, and inventory.

  • Experience building or configuring paid membership areas with access to videos, courses, and downloadable materials.

  • Experience with private video hosting and setting up a system that allows non-technical clients to upload and manage videos independently.

  • Experience working with website platforms and the ability to recommend a practical solution based on the client's needs.

  • Understanding of accessibility requirements and experience building accessible websites.

  • Ability to work with existing brand assets, product content, photography, and other client-provided materials.

  • Ability to work independently and manage the website project through launch.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work directly with a small-business owner.

  • Availability to start quickly and work within an urgent launch timeline.

  • Ability to provide basic post-launch support and, ideally, ongoing website updates and new features.

How the engagement works
  • The hiring process begins with a conversation with the client to discuss your experience, approach to the project.

  • Because the project has an urgent timeline, the client is looking for someone who can start quickly and make meaningful progress immediately.

  • The project scope and deliverables will be agreed upon directly with the client.

  • You are expected to provide your own laptop and basic equipment, maintain reliable connectivity, and have a secure working environment suitable for client work.

The engagement is project-based, with the initial focus on designing, building, testing, and launching the website. Basic post-launch support should be included, with the possibility of continuing to work with the client on future updates, content, and new features.

If you contract through Apricot, planned check-ins are [month 1 and month 3 / other approved cadence] to see how the engagement is working and help address issues.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
