PIMCO’s Alternatives platform is a key strategic growth area for the firm, managing approximately $160billion across a diverse range of investment strategies and vehicle structures, including evergreen and closed-end funds. As the platform continues to expand, the Alternatives Funds Tax team plays a central role in supporting this growth, providing tax planning and structuring support across the platform.

We are seeking to add a Vice President, Alternatives Tax to join our team.  In this role, you will focus on tax planning and structuring for the firm’s private equity and hedge funds, with responsibility spanning fund launches, deal structuring, and ongoing fund compliance oversight. The position offers significant visibility across the organization and the opportunity to partner closely with Portfolio Management, Product Strategy, Legal, Finance, Compliance, Operations, and external service providers, serving as a trusted advisor to the business.

You will leverage your technical expertise and influence to help shape investment structures, support new product development, and embed tax considerations into key business decisions.  Your scope will cover the full lifecycle: from participating in day-one fund and deal structuring through to ongoing oversight and investor-related matters, providing a forward-looking perspective on how tax impacts performance, scalability, and outcomes.

This role offers a unique opportunity to move beyond tax compliance and engage earlier in the lifecycle—contributing to deal structuring, shaping outcomes, and seeing firsthand how tax decisions impact investment performance and business growth.

  • Oversee and coordinate with external tax advisors to ensure timely and accurate K-1 delivery and investor reporting.

  • Respond to investor and internal stakeholder inquiries on tax- matters in a clear, practical, and business-oriented manner.

  • Support tax and compliance oversight, including tax provisions, estimated payments for corporate entities across fund structures.

  • Coordinate with service providers and the fund finance team on withholding tax analysis arising from cash movements across the investment structure, particularly for non-US investors

  • Monitor and support compliance with REIT/RIC structures (e.g., BDC structures), including income and asset tests.

  • Review tax carried interest calculations for carried interest vehicle and support related tax distribution processes.

  • Identify opportunities to enhance workflows, strengthen controls, mitigate tax risks, and scale the tax operating model as the platform grows.

  • Identify and drive opportunities to leverage data, automation, and AI to enhance decision-making, operating efficiency, and the adoption of scalable tools and modern capabilities across the business.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree.

  • 10-15 years of experience in tax, with a foundation in public accounting and/or a combination of public and in-house experience.

  • CPA and/or master’s in taxation preferred.

  • Strong experience with partnership and corporate taxation, including U.S. federal, state, and international tax considerations within large fund structures.

  • Experience with multi-tiered partnership structures, including private equity, hedge funds, and/or real estate, as well as related state tax compliance and withholding requirements.

  • Familiarity with structured credit, securitizations, and specialty investments (e.g., asset-backed lending, special situations) is highly desirable.

  • Proven ability to operate effectively in a high-volume, high pressure and fast paced growing business environment.

  • Proven ability to translate technical tax concepts into actionable business insights, with the judgment to identify risks and develop practical solutions.

  • Demonstrated curiosity and interest in understanding the business beyond tax, with a forward-looking, solution-oriented mindset.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
