MongoDB’s mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build and run applications anywhere—on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 new developers signing up to use MongoDB every month, it’s no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.

MongoDB is building the modern data platform of choice for developers looking to build applications faster and more reliably. We power some of the world’s most innovative technology products and services out of our offices worldwide, from New York to Sydney, Berlin to Dublin, and just about everywhere in between.

We’re searching for a UX Researcher who is passionate about creating great, intuitive customer experiences and generating business impact. This researcher should care deeply about our customers and be driven to improving the product experience for them. The right person for this role is someone who can identify user problems, serve as an assertive advocate for the user, and facilitate a user-centered cross-products development process.

About You

As a User Experience Researcher, you will be involved in all stages of the product design lifecycle—from identifying core user needs during the discovery phase to measuring impact on the user after a product is launched. By leveraging your broad skills in both quantitative and qualitative research, you will serve as a voice for the user and guide the user-centered design process.

You will help influence and define research processes, continuously finding opportunities to provide user insights to product teams to facilitate decision-making. You will work cross products and lead projects, working with product designers, product managers, and engineers to ensure that user needs are deeply understood by all team members. You will elevate the role of user research within MongoDB and mentor other researchers on how best to apply research to their projects or how to conduct research on their own.

Responsibilities

  • Understand our users and potential users by identifying their motivations, needs, expectations, and goals
  • Uncover areas of opportunity and identify actionable ways to improve the user experience of MongoDB products and services
  • Work closely with stakeholders to clearly define research problems, distilling technically complex requirements into actionable research plans
  • Ability to formulate specific, answerable, and practical questions, with the underlying desire to understand the “why" and “how”
  • Collect and analyze data through a wide array UX research methods including, but not limited to: field studies, surveys, competitive analyses, user interviews, card sorting, and live A/B testing
  • Translate research findings into actionable insights for diverse audiences, including product designers, product managers, engineers, and C-level executives
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on a portfolio of MongoDB products
  • Facilitate ideation sessions with product stakeholders

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate Degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science, Anthropology, Human Factors, HCI/CS or a related field
  • Well-versed in a variety of user research methods, and comfortable working with both qualitative and quantitative data
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of study design, qualitative and quantitative user research best practices, and experimental design
  • Superior communication skills and storytelling ability. You can properly contextualize research insights and articulate your thoughts clearly
  • Empathetic, communicative, creative problem solver, and a passionate user advocate
  • 2+ years of experience

Bonus Points for

  • Advanced degrees in relevant fields
  • Experience with software development or working knowledge of software developers’ workflows
  • Experience using user testing platforms and related software (i.e. usertesting.com, userzoom, qualtrics, etc.)
  • Experience working as a researcher in an industry with a specialized audience (e.g. developers, B2B, database, bankers, etc.)

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
