About the company

Our client is a defense manufacturing company.

The role

Raydar is recruiting for this role on behalf of our client. Design and deliver safety-critical production equipment for handling hazardous materials on a manufacturing floor. Own projects from early concept to shop-floor rollout, partnering with manufacturing and design colleagues and coaching less experienced staff.

What you'll do

- Create heavy-duty handling and processing equipment, including holding devices, forming tools and lifting or transfer assemblies, for hazardous bulk materials.

- Develop approaches for temperature regulation, moving material between facilities and safely splitting large quantities into smaller portions.

- Partner with manufacturing, design and production colleagues to meet cost, quality and schedule goals for initial builds.

- Take projects from initial idea through implementation on the production floor, applying simulation-based validation, tolerance analysis and design for manufacturability.

- Coach junior engineers and technicians.

- Make sure all work follows relevant aerospace and defense standards.

Requirements

What we're looking for

- 3 to 5+ years of experience in tooling or a closely related engineering discipline.

- A track record of designing sizeable load-bearing equipment for heavy or moving hardware.

- Experience in a fast-paced setting such as a startup or early-stage build program, rather than only at a long-established large contractor.

- A bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline such as mechanical or manufacturing.

- Advanced CAD proficiency for designing complex production, test and handling equipment.

- A solid grounding in structural mechanics, including simulation analysis, dynamic behavior, dimensional tolerancing and sizing of fabricated or welded assemblies.

- A safety-first approach, with a habit of spotting hazards early when working with dangerous materials.

- Ability to satisfy U.S. export-control eligibility requirements.

- Based in or willing to relocate to Torrance, CA.

Bonus points

- Prior work in hazardous or demanding hardware settings.

- Familiarity with design for manufacturability and quality standards such as AS9100.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
