Make Your Mark:

As a Sr. Software Engineer, you will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality, resilient releases to our customers by designing, developing, troubleshooting, maintaining, optimizing, and scaling BlackLine’s cloud-based backend services and driving innovation into our product suite. In this role, you will bridge software engineering and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)—collaborating across teams to build scalable new features, optimize existing services with elegant code, automate CI/CD pipelines, establish robust observability, and ensure uninterrupted platform availability. Your attention to detail, tenacity, creative problem-solving, and thinking ahead will directly impact the company's success, operational resilience, and the success of your peers across the organization. If you have a passion for delivering products that make a difference, are driven to make systems better and more reliable in all that you do, and are eager to work in a collaborative agile environment where developers are dedicated to solving customer problems and innovating, then we want to talk to you.

You'll Get To:

  • Feature Delivery & Core Engineering: Design, develop, and deliver product features and scalable cloud backend microservices, while adhering to timelines, coding standards, requirements, and quality.
  • Architecture & Maintainability: Implement, refine, and enforce software development techniques to ensure that delivered features meet software integration, performance, security, maintainability, and high-availability expectations.
  • Code Quality & Best Practices: Maintain high standards of software quality and technical excellence within the team by establishing good practices and habits and writing clean, testable, maintainable, and secure code.
  • CI/CD & Deployment Automation: Architect, enhance, and maintain automated CI/CD deployment pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, ArgoCD) to support zero-downtime rolling deployments, automated verification, and rapid release velocity.
  • Site Reliability & Observability: Establish Service Level Indicators (SLIs), Service Level Objectives (SLOs), and error budgets; build full-stack telemetry and monitoring solutions (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Datadog) to drive rapid MTTD and MTTR.
  • Culture of Excellence: Inspire a forward-thinking team of developers, acting as an agent of change and evangelist for a quality-first, reliability-focused engineering culture within the organization.
  • Mentorship & Coaching: Mentor and coach junior team members, guiding them to sound architectural solutions, automated testing patterns, and modern DevOps practices.
  • Proactive Problem-Solving: Proactively identify issues, bottlenecks, gaps, latency spikes, or scalability risks, and work to either directly affect change or advocate for that change by collaborating with peers and leadership to build consensus and take action.
  • Release Support & Incident Response: Perform critical maintenance, deployment, and release support activities, participate in blameless post-mortems, and provide occasional off-hours support.
  • Collaboration & Results: Adaptable team player with strong collaboration skills, clear technical communication, and a steadfast focus on results and customer value delivery.
  • Continuous Innovation: Demonstrated passion for engineering excellence, curiosity, and continuous learning in cloud-native technologies, automated testing, and developer productivity tools.

What You'll Bring:

  • Education & Experience: BS degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or 4+ years of relevant professional engineering experience.
  • Software Development: 4+ years of experience in software development using general-purpose programming languages, including but not limited to C#, .NET, Java, Go, or Python.
  • Web & API Architecture: 3+ years of hands-on experience in building Web Applications, SaaS products, and high-throughput RESTful APIs or microservices.
  • SRE & DevOps Mindset: Demonstrated hands-on experience or operational background in SRE/DevOps practices—such as automated deployments, telemetry/monitoring, containerization, and infrastructure reliability.
  • Containerization: Practical experience with containerization technologies (Docker) and container orchestration platforms (Kubernetes, EKS, or AKS).
  • Automation & CI/CD: Experience configuring and managing continuous integration and delivery pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins) and automated testing frameworks.
  • AI & Developer Productivity: 1+ years of experience with AI development tools, coding assistants, and modern productivity-enhancing processes.

We're Even More Excited If You Have (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Public Cloud & Cloud Native: Hands-on experience with public cloud architecture (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and cloud-native services.
  • Distributed Systems: Experience in service-oriented architecture (SOA), event-driven microservices, and designing/scaling high-performance distributed systems.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Experience authoring and managing Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, Helm, or CloudFormation.
  • Databases & Data Modeling: Advanced knowledge of SQL (stored procedures, data models, transactional flows) with PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and NoSQL databases.
  • Messaging & Middleware: Experience with messaging and streaming platforms (Kafka, SQS, RabbitMQ), API gateways, identity/auth management, and workflow orchestration.
  • Observability Tooling: Familiarity with distributed tracing, APM, and metrics collection using Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, Splunk, or ELK Stack.
  • Front-End Technologies: Experience with front-end technologies (HTML, JavaScript, CSS, modern JavaScript frameworks) is a plus.
  • Open Source & Reliability: Active experience with open-source tools, chaos engineering, and resilient architectural patterns.
  • Agile & Automation Focus: Prior experience in Scrum or Agile methodologies, with a passion for engineering excellence through automation, unit testing, and process improvements.
  • FinTech Domain: FinTech, accounting, or Financial Services domain background.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
