Our Power Group provides full-service engineering and design solutions for utility, institutional, and commercial clients across the U.S., with a strong focus on reliability, sustainability, and innovation. As part of our continued growth in the Power sector, we are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team. This position can be based in any of our offices nationwide, with a preference for our Boston office; however, candidates based in any Vanderweil office will be considered. This role plays a critical part in shaping the design of electrical power distribution, generation, renewables and other power systems that support the safe, efficient, and resilient operation of some of the most complex systems.
As a Senior Electrical Engineer in Vanderweil’s Power Group, you will be serving with and mentoring a team designing unique projects involving campus, industrial and institutional energy and utility generation systems, focused on simple cycle gas turbine and reciprocating engine power plants, combined heat and power, alternative fuels like biogas and hydrogen, fuel cells, thermal and battery storage, microgrids, among many other cutting-edge technologies. Vanderweil also serves a diverse set of clients including academic, biopharma, casino/hotel resorts, mission critical, and large scale and municipal utilities, among many other sectors.
Some of your Responsibilities:
- Lead the development of generation, distribution switchgear, renewables and protection/control design packages for projects ranging from 4160V to 34.5kV.
- Oversee the preparation of equipment layouts, grounding designs, conduit/cable routing plans, and wiring diagrams.
- Direct the creation of panel layouts, protection schematics, and control wiring drawings in accordance with industry standards.
- Serve as the primary design interface with engineers, project managers, and external stakeholders to ensure design quality and schedule alignment.
- Support field installation efforts with constructability reviews, field markups, and as-built drawing updates.
- Review and approve drawing packages prepared by junior engineers and designers; provide mentoring and training support.
- Champion design quality and process improvements through peer reviews, lessons learned, and adoption of new tools and methods.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical or Power Engineering
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in related field of power generation and heavy industrial projects, with experience designing medium voltage (5kV/35kV) and low voltage (480V) systems.
- Utilize knowledge of IEEE, IBC, NESC, and NEC electrical codes.
- Knowledge of industry products and design solutions including AutoCAD, Revit, ETAP, SKM, AGI 32, CYME, AMPCALC.and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to present reports and designs to clients.
- PE highly preferred; LEED preferred.

This is a high-visibility role, and the total compensation we expect to pay for this position is dependent on years of experience, licensure, education, geographic location, and project portfolio. The expected compensation range is $165,000 to $205,000. This range is intended as a guideline based on the anticipated qualifications and responsibilities of the role; depending on a candidate’s experience, expertise, and overall qualifications, compensation may be considered above this range when appropriate.
