About Thalamus

Thalamus is the market leader in graduate medical education recruitment technology, empowering over 8,000 residency and fellowship programs at 800+ health systems and all new physicians throughout the US annually. As we expand beyond GME into broader physician recruitment, our unique dataset—spanning the full profiles of residency/fellowship applicants and programs—positions us to revolutionize hiring in healthcare through AI/ML and data-driven insights. This furthers our mission to ensure the right doctor ends up at the right hospital to treat the right patients.

About the Role

We are expanding our marketing team and looking for an exceptional Senior Director of Marketing. This is a rare opportunity to shape the marketing team of a high-growth, product-led, mission-driven, and growth-stage company that is solving one of the most critical workforce challenges in healthcare, and costs the US healthcare system upwards of $300B annually.

As the Senior Director of Marketing, you will own the development and execution of foundational marketing strategies that will support both near-term customer acquisition in the graduate medical education (GME) market and long-term expansion into a physician workforce and lifecycle management platform. Reporting to our Founder & CEO, you will be the strategic force behind the Thalamus brand and marketing engine—driving awareness, engagement, and growth across a complex, two-sided marketplace. You’ll lead a team and collaborate closely with cross-functional partners to ensure our brand is clear, compelling, and consistent from first touchpoint to long-term partnership.

At Thalamus, we value collaborative leadership, bold thinking, and a commitment to our mission of ensuring the right doctor ends up at the right hospital to treat the right patients. If you are passionate about marketing excellence, leading high-performing teams, and making a meaningful impact in healthcare, we invite you to join us on our journey to "Connect the Docs."

What You Will Achieve

  • Brand Strategy & Management

    • Define and evolve a cohesive brand identity that spans all customer segments—students, residents, physicians, programs, and institutions—as well as strategic collaborators

    • Establish and uphold clear brand guidelines, ensuring consistency across all internal and external communications

    • Monitor brand performance and perception, iterating strategy based on insights and market trends

  • Marketing Strategy Development & Execution

    • Build and lead a foundational marketing strategy aligned with Thalamus’s growth trajectory, business goals, and long-term vision

    • Oversee the planning, budgeting, and execution of integrated campaigns across the marketing funnel
    • Shape market entry and expansion strategies, balancing brand building with near-term revenue generation

  • Content & Communications Leadership

    • Set the vision for content strategy, ensuring storytelling aligns with our brand, business objectives, and audience needs
    • Oversee content execution across campaigns, brand, events, and thought leadership initiatives

    • Position Thalamus as a category leader through consistent, high-impact messaging

  • Events & Engagement Oversight

    • Develop the strategic approach to Thalamus-led and industry events—virtual and in-person—to strengthen our presence and relationships
    • Ensure events contribute to key business objectives: lead generation, brand exposure, and talent recruitment

    • Evaluate event ROI and guide future investments accordingly

  • Cross-functional & Executive Collaboration

    • Act as a strategic marketing partner to Product, Sales, Customer Experience, and Talent leaders
    • Work closely with our CEO to shape and amplify the voice of the company, blending historical context with future vision

    • Participate in strategic planning cycles, aligning marketing initiatives to company-wide OKRs and launch milestones

  • Talent Branding

    • Lead employer brand strategy to position Thalamus as a top destination for mission-driven, high-performing talent
    • Collaborate with the Talent team to support recruiting through consistent, values-aligned messaging

  • AI & Technology Enablement

    • Evaluate and implement AI-enabled tools and marketing technologies that increase scale, precision, and efficiency
    • Foster a culture of experimentation and innovation within the marketing team

  • Performance Measurement & Optimization

    • Define and report on marketing KPIs to track effectiveness, inform decisions, and drive continuous improvement

    • Use data insights to iterate on campaigns and strategy, and to communicate progress to executive stakeholders

You should have …

  • 10+ years of progressive marketing experience, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership role at a growth-stage B2B or marketplace company

  • Proven ability to build and scale marketing functions across brand, growth, content, and communications

  • Background marketing health tech to enterprise healthcare clients

  • Strong understanding of modern marketing tech stacks, AI-enabled tools, and analytics platforms

  • Exceptional communication, storytelling, and cross-functional leadership skills

  • Strategic thinker who thrives in both the high-level vision and the hands-on execution necessary to work in a scrappy startup environment

  • Mission-oriented and excited to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment that’s building infrastructure to support the future of healthcare

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills with a propensity for clear, structured thinking, and ability to influence stakeholders in a remote-first environment

Bonus

  • Experience in the health tech, marketplace SaaS, or recruitment industries

  • Experience developing marketing strategies for two-sided marketplace

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
