Description
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences designed not only to be seen, but also to be felt. From breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features, we are turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard.
The Robotics Software team is pioneering the next generation of autonomous robotic systems, with a focus on autonomous mobile equipment (AME) and intelligent robotic platforms. We develop full-stack robotics capabilities-from perception and planning to control and system integration-to deliver innovative, real-world autonomous solutions for the future of work.
We are seeking a Robot Application Software Engineer to help expand our production AME data platform and developer tooling while supporting operator-facing AME graphical user interface (GUI) development as needed. This role will focus on building scalable data portal capabilities, cloud and data pipeline infrastructure, calibration and configuration tools, robot and software-version tracking, regression reporting, and integrations with OTA and ROC workflows for AMEs deployed across production manufacturing environments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and enhance the AME data platform, including data portals, dashboards, robot and software-version tracking, regression reporting, and developer-facing tools.
  • Build scalable cloud-computing and data-pipeline capabilities for robot telemetry, calibration and configuration uploads, automated reporting, and production analytics.
  • Support OTA and ROC integration by connecting robot software release data, operational status, remote-support workflows, and fleet-level diagnostics within the AME data ecosystem.
  • Maintain and improve production data infrastructure across live manufacturing plants, including database reliability, upload pipelines, data-quality monitoring, and incident response.
  • Support AME GUI development as needed, including operator-facing dashboards, diagnostic views, fleet-management tools, and data-intensive web interfaces.
  • Partner with autonomy, deployment, ROC, OTA, and plant teams to scale AME software and data capabilities across more than 300 production robots at LOC, Flint, Spring Hill, Kokomo, and future deployment sites.
  • Deliver production-grade software with strong ownership of versioning, change control, observability, debugging, and on-call support to minimize factory downtime.
  • Champion performance, reliability, accessibility, and maintainability across the software ecosystem.
  • Represent factory operations in engineering reviews by translating complex technical KPIs into actionable insights for leadership and floor technicians.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, robotics, engineering, or a related field.
  • At least five years of software engineering experience, including at least two years developing user interfaces or human-robot interfaces for industrial or robotics applications.
  • Advanced proficiency in JavaScript or TypeScript and modern web frameworks such as React or Angular, with experience building responsive, data-intensive web interfaces.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux, Docker, and Git.
  • Ability to understand and represent factory operations in engineering discussions and translate complex technical metrics into actionable insights for technical and nontechnical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Six to ten or more years of hands-on experience developing high-performance web or mobile applications, including at least five years focused on robotics or complex autonomous systems.
  • Experience delivering production software in manufacturing or logistics environments.
  • Advanced proficiency with modern web frameworks, such as React or Angular, combined with experience using industrial SCADA platforms such as Ignition, Siemens WinCC, or Rockwell FactoryTalk.
  • Familiarity with 3D visualization technologies and libraries such as Three.js or WebGL.
  • Experience with simulation environments such as NVIDIA Isaac Sim.

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}.
The selected candidate will be required to travel <25% for this role.
This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
