Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.

The Waymo Policy and Government Affairs team has a front seat in this exciting moment in the evolution of autonomous driving technology, transportation and tech policy. Successful navigation of the policy landscape is critically important to deploying and scaling our business. Our team works directly with policymakers and third party groups at the national, state and local levels to help advance transportation policy, educate on the safety benefits of the technology, and advance consumer awareness and acceptance. Internally, our efforts support the innovative work of engineering, product, strategy, and partnerships teams, and we work closely with highly-skilled legal and safety experts.

In this hybrid role, you will report into our Director of U.S. State and Local Public Policy and Political Campaigns.

You will:

  • Design and develop public policy advocacy campaigns aligned with Waymo's policy objectives for a portfolio of concurrent U.S. city, state, and federal campaigns.
  • Orchestrate all phases of public policy campaigns from inception to conclusion, ensuring timely execution and achievement of objectives. Public Policy campaigns will be both proactive and defensive and focus on securing political objectives.
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., legal, communications, marketing, public affairs, business units) to ensure integrated campaign efforts. This will include providing detailed briefings, reports and presentations on campaign progress and results.
  • Track and manage campaign budgets to ensure efficient allocation of resources and actively monitor and ensure regulatory compliance, and manage the work of other campaign support staff, and media buying consultants to ensure timely and effective execution of political campaigns.
  • Develop an intimate understanding of the political landscape of various cities, states, and countries as it relates to transportation and technology.
  • Serve as a Waymo representative at conferences and political events in close conjunction with Policy, Public Affairs and Communications. This will include tracking political trends and developments important for the company.

You have:

  • 5-7+ years of experience in political campaign management and execution or relevant corporate, nonprofit, public interest group, lobbying firm or industry association experience; ideally at least 2+ years working specifically on technology or transportation policy issues.
  • Experience collaborating with public affairs firms, trade associations, think tanks and other third-party voices.
  • Ability to manage and track significant political campaign budgets along with ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Skilled and experienced at persuasively and diplomatically messaging complex policy positions before a wide variety of audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel throughout the country to support the Policy team and participate in relevant conferences, meetings, and other events.

We prefer:

  • Experience executing high-stakes corporate political campaigns.
  • Work experience in the private sector.
  • Bachelor's degree, JD/MBA/MPP preferred.
  • Knowledge of the policy environment for autonomous vehicles.
  • Knowledge of future of work, labor, and workforce development policy issues.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
