Remote (UK/Europe) | £60k – £90k + Equity

The Mission

Birda is a game-changing app making birdwatching cooler and more accessible than ever before. Imagine Pokémon Go, but with real birds and real adventures.

In just a few years, we’ve grown to hundreds of thousands of users across 177 countries and have been acclaimed as ‘App of the Day’ by Apple in 148 countries. We are on a mission to connect people with nature through our birdwatching-buddy app, and we are looking for a Product Engineer to join us.

The Role

You will work across the full stack in a small, mission-driven team (~4 engineers), reporting directly to Alvaro Yuste (Head of Engineering).

1. The Tech Stack You should have proficiency in our core technologies:

  • Languages: JavaScript & TypeScript (Essential).

  • Mobile: React Native + Expo.

  • Backend: GraphQL + PostgreSQL

2. The Mindset

  • Product-First Thinking: You contribute to product ideation, care deeply about UX, and are comfortable with prioritisation, trade-offs, and analytics. You don’t wait for detailed specs; you thrive in ambiguity and love solving users' problems.

  • Smart & Adaptable: You have a growth mindset and use modern tools like AI to multiply your output. You thrive in the fast-paced and ambiguous environment of a startup or scale-up.

  • Seniority: Senior or lead-level engineer who prefers a technical career path over people management, but is capable of understanding big-picture trade-offs, rather than just executing tasks.

  • Mission-Driven: You don’t need to be an expert birder, but you should love the outdoors. You are motivated by building technology that has a positive purpose.

Bonus: Exposure to technical leadership and strategy is valuable.

Conditions and benefits
  • Salary: £60,000 – £90,000 base.

  • Equity: Stock options.

  • Time Off: 25 vacation days + bank holidays + a bonus day for your birthday.

  • Fully Remote: You must be based within a ±1 hour window of the CET timezone.

  • Flexibility: Ideally based in the UK, but we partner with Remote.com to hire top talent across Europe/Africa within the time zone constraints.

  • Gear: Staff discount on outdoor equipment and cameras.

  • Other: Co-working space allowance, and team gatherings/events.

The Hiring Process

We respect your time and aim for a transparent process:

  1. First Conversation (30-45 mins): A chat with Alvaro (Head of Engineering). We’ll discuss the company mission, engineering culture, and your background. This is your chance to see if Birda feels like home.

  2. Technical Session: A pair-programming session with Dave (Principal Engineer). We’ll develop a small feature and debug an issue together. We care about your mental framework for problem-solving and communication, not just the syntax.

  3. Cultural & Product Fit: A conversation with Product and Leadership team members. You’ll explore the business approach, product vision, and how you’ll collaborate with stakeholders.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
