ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.

ProPublica is hiring a software engineer to work primarily on the systems and services that power our audience data platforms. This important role serves to advance ProPublica’s mission — publishing journalism with real-world impact — by enabling systems that bring us greater understanding of our audiences and donors.

We’re looking for an experienced engineer who believes in our mission and thrives in multifaceted roles, contributing both to the long-term product road map and to hands-on development. Your responsibilities will include shipping high-quality and resilient code and collaborating with designers, product managers, data analysts, other engineers and agency partners. You’ll write code, configure no- and low-code integrations, contribute to our documentation, share your expertise and proactively solve problems.

As a member of our expanding, crossfunctional product team, you’ll work with colleagues across ProPublica’s engineering, audience and membership operations, ensuring that our capabilities align with our principles and advance our organizational objectives. This position reports to our director of product engineering and will work closely with the audience data and insights analyst.

What you’ll do
  • Build and ship reader-facing features that drive membership — calls to action, donation flows, and account and authentication experiences — with clean, resilient code.
  • Integrate the systems behind them: messaging tools, payments and donation processing platforms, user accounts, CDP and CRM, and the data infrastructure that connect them.
  • Instrument the audience and donor journey. Set up accurate and actionable event tracking so every meaningful step is captured cleanly and becomes data we can act on.
  • Support making experimentation routine. Build the infrastructure for A/B testing and, with internal business teams, run experiments regularly so our decisions rest on evidence instead of guesswork.
  • Write front-end  services and integrations as needed. (Our site runs on Wordpress VIP.)
  • Working with our engineering leaders, protect reader privacy and keep us compliant with legal and regulatory requirements.
Required qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in front-end software development and system integrations, with a track record of implementing and maintaining performant, secure, scalable solutions.
  • Experience interacting with audience and reader data platforms, such as Salesforce, Google Analytics, Parse.ly, Sailthru, or similar CRMs, CDPs and analytics tools.
  • Experience working on a customer data platform implementation within the last two years.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with experience in a highly collaborative team environment, supporting diverse stakeholders and adapting solutions to evolving business needs.
  • Clear and effective spoken and written communication skills, with the ability to document technical processes and present complex integration workflows to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel for occasional staff summits or other required events.
Preferred qualifications
  • Prior experience implementing solutions such as Piano or MonetizationOS or building similar functionality.
  • Working knowledge of Wordpress and/or Wordpress VIP.
  • Fluency with at least one language used in web development, such as PHP, Typescript or vanilla JS.
  • Track record of doing hands-on work with cloud data warehouses like Google BigQuery and customer data platforms such as Braze or Hightouch.
  • Knowledge of newsroom workflows and a passion for journalism.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
