We're looking for a Product Designer to join our Activate team — a group dedicated to helping new customers turn their initial curiosity into meaningful family history exploration. By helping people make sense of their family history and uncover meaningful connections, we empower millions of members to continue exploring the stories that shape who they are.

This role is focused on creating a best-in-class experience for our DNA customers. You’ll be driving multiple product experiences from DNA kit registration to our DNA traits offering, including exciting new technology and product advancements that make family history more accessible than ever before.

You’ll report to the Senior Manager of Product Design on the Activate team and collaborate closely with peers across product, design, science, engineering, research, content, and data analytics. Together, you'll create experiences that will help customers develop a greater sense of identity, belonging, and curiosity.

You’ll join a highly collaborative environment that values curiosity, clarity, and a deep commitment to customer understanding. We offer a flexible, hybrid culture with a strong focus on work/life balance — so you can grow your career while staying grounded in what matters most.

What you’ll do
  • Own the end-to-end design and delivery of features within core DNA customer workflows.
  • Partner with product managers, engineers, and scientists to translate complex technical and genetic requirements into clear, user-centered feature designs.
  • Design clear, intuitive user flows using established design systems, interaction patterns, and accessibility standards.
  • Utilize user research and feedback to inform design decisions that build trust and clarity.
  • Create high-quality flows, prototypes, and polished interactions that bring ideas to life and inspire teams.
  • Apply design system components and patterns to maintain consistency across core workflows.
  • Articulate design decisions, rationale, and tradeoffs clearly to align cross-functional partners.
  • Contribute positively to team culture through active participation in design critiques, feedback sessions, and peer collaboration.

Who you are
  • Demonstrated experience designing direct-to-consumer products, with a portfolio showcasing intuitive, polished digital experiences.
  • Comfortable delivering feature execution end-to-end and delivering high-quality work on time.
  • Skilled at turning complex information and workflows into intuitive, approachable experiences.
  • Thoughtful systems thinker who effectively leverages established design systems to maintain consistency across core user journeys.
  • Strong visual and interaction design craft, with sharp attention to detail, UI polish, and accessibility standards.
  • Clear communicator who effectively articulates design intent, rationale, and tradeoffs.
  • Customer-focused mindset, with experience incorporating user research, feedback, and usability testing directly into design iterations.
  • Experienced partner to product managers, engineers, and researchers, collaborating daily to deliver impactful features and strengthen team culture.
  • Passionate about helping people make meaningful discoveries and connect deeply with their family history and DNA insights.

Bonus: Experience designing discovery, search, educational, AI-powered, or data-rich products, or familiarity with genealogy, DNA, health, science, or other evidence-based domains. Experience designing native mobile app experiences.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
