About Us

At SimplePractice, our team is dedicated to improving the health and wellness industry by building a suite of innovative solutions for practitioners and their clients. Our product supports practitioners on their clinical journey, helps them manage their business and practice once they’re up and running, and enables new clients to discover and interact with practitioners. Taking a practitioner-first approach in everything we do makes it possible for health and wellness practitioners to devote more time to their clients while they use SimplePractice to start, grow, and maintain a successful private practice.

The Role

Our ideal candidate is someone eager to learn and develop their design skills across multiple disciplines (product, content, interaction, and visual design). You'll be supported in our collaborative environment where we encourage questions, provide mentorship, and value fresh perspectives. We embrace a "learning by doing" approach and understand that internships are about growth and skill development.

While you'll have opportunities to explore various design aspects, we don't expect you to have all the answers. Your curiosity, willingness to ask questions, and enthusiasm for improving your skills will make you a valuable team member. This internship is designed to help you build real-world experience while receiving guidance from experienced designers.

Some examples of project work you might do include:

  • Assisting with crafting research plans and participating in customer interviews
  • Analyzing data trends on existing product areas to reveal insights and identify opportunities
  • Working with designers and the design systems team to update user interfaces to deliver a more delightful experience to customers
  • Improving our accessibility capabilities and help collaboration across product, design, and engineering to deliver inclusive customer facing products

This is a paid internship that is remote and can be up to 40 hours per week based on availability. We sometimes meet at our Santa Monica office for workshops and events, but it isn’t required.

Responsibilities

  • Applying our design system components to create consistent and polished user interfaces, while suggesting refinements that improve usability
  • Supporting our commitment to accessibility by applying WCAG guidelines and best practices throughout the design process
  • Contributing fresh perspectives and creative ideas for upcoming features or product improvements
  • Participating in design critiques where your attention to detail and unique viewpoint will be valued
  • Conducting competitive analysis to identify design trends and bring innovative approaches to our product experience

Desired Skills & Experience

  • A portfolio or case study showcasing your best project that demonstrates creative problem-solving and user-friendly product experiences
  • Background in product, UX, interaction, or visual design
  • Proficiency with Figma (or similar design tools)
  • Knowledge of responsive web design for desktop and mobile devices
  • Familiarity with iOS and Android design principles
  • Strong writing skills for clear communication
  • Ability to explore diverse visual design options while adhering to brand guidelines
  • Experience using data to inform design decisions
  • Enthusiasm for helping users navigate complex workflows
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Currently pursuing or completed a degree/certificate in Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or related fields

Bonus Skills

  • Familiarity with mental healthcare concepts or experience in mental health-related settings
  • Understanding of AI language models and prompt engineering
  • Basic knowledge of front-end development
  • Graphic design or illustration skills

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
