Position Summary
The Principal Scientist will report directly to the Sr. Director, R&D and Innovation. This position will be responsible for developing new formulas for color cosmetics. The Principal Scientist will also work with Manufacturing to transfer new or modified formulas from the laboratory to production, including writing manufacturing procedures and setting specifications.
Essential Tasks, Duties, & Responsibilities
- Design and formulate complex formulations to push the innovation sphere in cosmetics
- Execute innovative problem solving through deep knowledge of raw materials, pigments, and formulation technology
- Act as a technical coach to Junior and Senior Chemists, fostering a culture of scientific rigor
- Oversee multiple high-priority projects, ensuring milestones are met on time and within budget
- Develop new formulas for color cosmetics such as lip gloss, makeup, and mascaras
- Ideate and refine manufacturing processes to enable smooth transfer of new or modified formulas from laboratory to production
- Perform all necessary stability and compatibility tests on all new formulas
- Work with the Quality group to maintain and improve overall product quality
- Review formulas and raw materials for compliance with International Guidelines
- Keep current with new ingredients and technologies and recommend new materials and techniques to management as appropriate
- Available to work an evening shift when needed
- Travel to Mexico approximately every other week to support on-site manufacturing, scale-up, and production activities
- Perform other duties as needed and directed by management

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or other scientific discipline
- A minimum of 15+ years working within the cosmetics industry
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical documents
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 50%, including frequent international travel to Mexico
- Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Must have knowledge of SOPs, GMPs and FDA regulations
