ABOUT VEG

In 2014, VEG was born with a mission to help people and their pets when they need it most by challenging norms and fixing the ER experience. Since then, we’ve expanded rapidly, with hospitals nationwide open 24/7/365, and created an ER experience that focuses on what our pets and pet parents really need. We’ve done the same for our people (VEGgies), finding a way to say YES so they are empowered to achieve great things, grow in unexpected ways, and find a place where they truly belong.

We’re rethinking emergency care from every angle—from how we run our hospitals to how we support the people working inside them. That’s where our headquarters team comes in. Whether building technology to make our hospitals more efficient, recruiting and growing incredible VEGgies, or bringing our brand to life through marketing, our VQ (VEG Headquarters) team makes it all possible—ensuring our hospitals and people have everything they need to help pets and their families.

VEG is a 2025 and 2026 certified Great Place to Work®.

THE JOB

At VEG, we find a way to say YES, and this role brings that mindset to how we support, grow, and care for our VEGgies in the field.

As a People Business Partner, you will serve as a trusted senior People partner to Market Owners and hospital leaders across your region. You will help leaders make strong people decisions, navigate complex employee situations, build future talent readiness, and create a consistent VEGgie experience.

This is a field-based business partnership role for someone who can operate close to the front line while thinking strategically about talent, engagement, performance, leadership capability, and hospital growth. You’ll bring sound judgment, field credibility, data-informed recommendations, and deep care to the moments that matter most.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Strategic People Partnership: Serve as the People Business Partner for your assigned region, partnering with Market Owners and hospital leaders to translate business priorities into practical People strategies that strengthen hospital performance, leader effectiveness, talent health, retention, engagement, and the VEGgie experience.
  • Field Presence & Trust Building: Spend meaningful time in hospitals across your geography to build trusted relationships with VEGgies and leaders, stay close to field reality, and ensure People support is grounded in what is actually happening in the hospitals.
  • Leader Coaching & Employee Relations: Coach Market Owners and hospital leaders through performance management, employee relations, conflict, engagement, difficult conversations, and sensitive people moments with care, consistency, urgency, and sound judgment.
  • Talent, Performance & People Processes: Support regional execution of core People processes, including talent reviews, succession and development planning, engagement surveys, performance reviews, retention initiatives, compensation reviews, and growth plan adoption.
  • Data, Pattern Recognition & Risk Management: Use people data, field insights, and recurring themes across hospitals to identify talent, engagement, retention, performance, and employee relations risks; diagnose root causes; and bring forward practical recommendations.
  • Change Adoption & Cross-Functional Partnership: Partner with People COEs, Talent, Legal, VQ, and regional operations teams to support adoption of People initiatives, escalate systemic themes, improve program usability, and protect the VEG culture in hospital reality.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • 3-5+ years of progressive Human Resources / People experience, including meaningful HRBP or People Business Partner experience supporting leaders through complex people, performance, engagement, and employee relations matters.
  • Experience supporting distributed, field-based, multi-site, healthcare, retail, hospitality, veterinary, or similarly high-growth operational environments strongly preferred.
  • Strong business judgment with the ability to connect People decisions to operational outcomes, staffing health, retention, engagement, leader effectiveness, and the employee experience.
  • Trusted-advisor presence with the credibility to influence senior field leaders, challenge constructively, coach through ambiguity, and hold the bar in high-stakes situations.
  • Proven experience managing complex employee relations issues, facilitating difficult conversations, supporting documentation, and applying HR policies and employment law considerations with sound judgment.
  • Ability to recognize patterns across data and field signals, diagnose root causes, and turn engagement, retention, employee relations, and performance trends into practical recommendations.
  • Experience supporting performance management, talent reviews, succession planning, development planning, engagement action planning, and leader coaching.
  • Comfort spending significant time in hospitals with frontline teams; ability to travel up to 50–70% of the time.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Business, or related field preferred.
  • PHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, or similar certification a plus.
  • Experience with Workday or similar HR systems preferred.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Empathetic, instinctively taking a people-centric approach, whether supporting your colleagues or making an effort to understand different perspectives
  • Have a sense of humility; acknowledging mistakes, sharing credit with others, and lifting up your team’s’ accomplishments
  • Feel a strong sense of ownership over your work, taking responsibility for outcomes and staying committed to achieving long-term, impactful results
  • Curious by nature; you ask insightful questions and continuously seek out opportunities to learn and grow your skills and knowledge

HOW WE INVEST IN YOU

  • Competitive Compensation Including  ($125,000 - $175,000) + bonus + benefits.
  • Comprehensive health and wellness benefits that start on day one, and access to free therapy or counseling
  • Paid parental leave, up to 12 weeks at 100% of regular salary, and offering inclusive fertility and family-building care for all types of families
  • Unlimited PTO to use for vacation or sick days—however you need it!
  • Generous employee referral program, so our awesome people can bring in more awesome people.
  • And the little (big) things, like casual office attire, ability to bring your fur baby to work, cool VEG swag, food in the fridge for when you’re hungry and free lunches twice a week!!
  • Company laptop and a monthly cell phone reimbursement

DEI

At VEG, diversity is not just a word—it's a strength that fuels innovation and kindness. Our mission is “Helping people and their pets when they need it most.” And we do that better when our VEGgies (employees) feel valued, respected, and empowered to bring their authentic selves to work. That's why we're devoted to creating an environment that reflects the diverse communities we serve—where different perspectives are not only welcomed but celebrated.

We are focused on providing equitable opportunities for growth, promoting inclusive decision-making, and ensuring that everyone's perspective is considered. Saying yes to VEG means helping us build a culture where your unique experiences and background contribute to a shared vision: being the world’s veterinary emergency company.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
