Overview of the Position

Students for Life of America is looking to hire a Media Director for our Media Team. We are looking for someone with exceptional writing, editing, and organizational experience who also has a knack for managing content creation and schedules, along with a desire to help the team succeed. The Managing Editor will develop and write copy for SFLA, including articles, news releases, and opinion pieces, and in the role, may be called on to edit or write products such as speeches and testimonies. However, editing copy and managing the workflow of those writing and editing copy from our content writers, will be an important part of management for the team.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement editorial strategies to enhance content quality and audience engagement.
  • Ensure all content meets high standards of accuracy, clarity, and consistency with internal protocols.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as the SFLA Marketing Team, to align content with overall company goals.
  • Handle any editorial issues or conflicts that arise.
  • Create and manage an Asana board for all Media Team tasks and assignments.
  • Write copy for Students for Life of America & Students for Life Action, including press releases, articles for websites, support materials, opinion pieces, and talking points.
  • Ensure all meeting notes are taken during weekly calls, and all media requests are distributed to the team.
  • Ensure that the SFLA/SFLAction lexicon and style guide is incorporated in copy in addition to grammar, spelling, and AP style when it does not conflict with the organizational style.

Position Details

Position Type

  • This is a full-time salaried position working at least 40 hours per week. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours can be somewhat flexible by request.
  • This is a position that will require occasional evening and weekend work, depending on breaking news and rapid response issues.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • The Media Director will report to the Vice President of Media & Policy and will collaborate with multiple departments within the Pro-Life Generation and manage the writing team and their projects through Asana.
Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook. 
  • Candidates must have knowledge of grammar rules and utilize the oxford comma, and expertise in AP style writing.
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a Managing Editor or in a similar editorial leadership role.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to helping less experienced team members turn written copy into a final product.
  • Skilled in writing, as seen in work product and published articles/op-ed pieces.

  • Committed to working with less experienced writers & story tellers
  • Flexible as responding to breaking news will sometimes be required.

 Physical Demands

  • Must have the ability to operate technical equipment such as a computer and sit for extended periods of time. 
  • Must be able to withstand long periods of driving. 
  • Must be available for events as needed.

Travel

  • Travel to bi-annual team trainings in January and July is required.

Work Authorization

  • Must be able to successfully complete an I-9.  The I-9 is used for verifying the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired for employment in the United States.
