The Legal & Policy Team is Snap’s dedicated in-house law firm, policy consultant, lobbyist, thought partner, and all-around advisor. This team helps Snap do the right thing the right way, make better decisions, understand and manage risks, and creatively navigate challenges, both external and internal. We partner with Snap team members on a wide array of matters, including privacy, product, IP, commercial transactions, corporate governance, employment, acquisitions, litigation, and policy, and social impact. We’re looking for a talented intellectual property attorney to join Snap Inc. As a member of our IP Legal team, you’ll have an exciting opportunity to work with Snap’s teams and outside counsel to creatively navigate trademark, copyright, and right of publicity issues. You’ll participate in all aspects of our trademark program, including clearance, prosecution, and enforcement. And you’ll have an opportunity to contribute to a wide range of other IP projects, such as commercial deals, legal defense, M&A, and liability safe harbor compliance.
What you'll do:
Handle trademark and copyright enforcement matters in a thoughtful and strategic way
Assist with all aspects of trademark and copyright prosecution, including developing filing strategies and reviewing submissions to national trademark offices
Conduct trademark clearance
Review creative content/concepts and advise clients on the IP risks
Handle rightsholder reports of on-platform infringement
Advise product teams on how to comply with secondary liability safe harbors like the DMCA
Resolve disputes alleging claims of infringement against Snap
Advise colleagues on IP-related language in commercial agreements
Conduct internal trainings on IP best practices, such as on use of third-party content
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Deep knowledge of trademark prosecution and opposition practice and procedures at the USPTO, and some knowledge of the same at international trademark offices
Ability to formulate a trademark filing and maintenance strategy
Some experience advising clients on the applicability of First Amendment and fair use defenses in the context of copyright and trademark
Some knowledge of right of publicity law in the US
Some experience with platform responsibilities under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and similar laws
Ability to distill complex legal concepts into clear, concise, unequivocal, and highly practical guidance to business and product teams
Excellent legal and business judgment, strategic thinking, and ability to manage the details of multiple matters at once
Outstanding communication and organization skills
Strong work ethic and an ability to accommodate tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
A collaborative team player
Minimum Qualifications:
Juris Doctor degree
Valid state bar registration
4 years of trademark and copyright experience at a law firm or in-house at a company
Preferred Qualifications:
6+ years of core trademark and copyright experience (counseling, clearance prosecution, enforcement, litigation) with a law firm or in-house at a company with an international trademark portfolio
2+ years experience advising product and creative teams at a technology or media company, whether as outside or in-house counsel
