Position Summary

The Human Resources Manager is responsible for managing Sterling Transportation’s day-to-day HR operations across a multi-state workforce. This role supports payroll, benefits, 401(k) administration, employee relations, recruiting, onboarding, policy administration, compliance, HR records, and HRIS processes. The position requires strong knowledge of federal and multi-state employment laws, with California labor and employment law experience required. Paycom experience is a plus, and bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administer daily HR operations, including employee records, HR reporting, policy communication, onboarding, offboarding, and confidential employee documentation.
  • Manage or support multi-state payroll administration, including timekeeping, wage-and-hour compliance, deductions, reimbursements, final pay, and payroll-related employee questions.
  • Administer employee benefits and 401(k) processes, including enrollments, changes, terminations, open enrollment, vendor coordination, employee questions, and supporting documentation.
  • Provide guidance to managers and employees on employee relations, attendance, corrective action, workplace concerns, performance documentation, and company policy interpretation.
  • Conduct or coordinate workplace investigations and escalate high-risk or legally sensitive matters as appropriate.
  • Ensure HR practices remain compliant with federal, state, and local employment laws, with strong emphasis on California labor requirements, including wage and hour, meal and rest periods, paid sick leave, leaves of absence, final pay, personnel records, reimbursements, and required notices.
  • Support recruiting, selection, job postings, interviews, offer letters, background screening, new-hire documentation, orientation, and onboarding activities.
  • Maintain and update HR policies, procedures, handbook content, required notices, training records, and employee acknowledgments.
  • Administer HRIS workflows and employee data changes; support payroll, benefits, recruiting, onboarding, performance management, document retention, and reporting processes.
  • Partner with leadership to identify HR process improvements, compliance needs, employee engagement opportunities, and training requirements.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPhysical Demands and Work Environment

This position primarily operates in a professional office environment and may require periodic work at transportation, warehouse, or operational facilities. The employee is regularly required to communicate, sit, stand, walk, use hands or fingers, and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. QualificationsRequired Qualifications
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible Human Resources experience, preferably in a multi-location operational environment such as transportation, logistics, warehousing, or distribution.
  • Strong working knowledge of federal and multi-state employment laws; California labor and employment law experience is required.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting payroll, benefits administration, 401(k) administration, employee relations, investigations, recruitment, onboarding, policy administration, and HR compliance.
  • Experience supporting employees in multiple states and applying state-specific payroll, leave, onboarding, policy, and termination requirements.
  • Strong communication, judgment, confidentiality, organization, accuracy, follow-through, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and HR information systems; Paycom experience is a plus.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or related field preferred; SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification preferred.
