Summary of Role:

GHJ is seeking an accomplished High Net Worth (HNW) Tax professional with deep experience in serving high net worth individuals and their related entities.

This position reports to the Tax Department Practice Leader.

The Tax HNW Managing Director will be responsible for leading client engagements requiring individual, trust and gift tax expertise. The ideal candidate will have advanced technical skills in a variety of tax areas, along with well-developed and demonstrated management and supervisory skills.  Administrative, leadership, and business development responsibilities are also key elements for this position.  

You will be responsible for:

    The Tax HNW Managing Director is responsible for the efficient, accurate, complete, and timely preparation of all clients' tax returns whether prepared personally or by supervision of others.  Advanced technical skills in a variety of tax and accounting areas, along with well-developed and applied management and supervisory skills, are required. Responsibilities include:

    • Managing the preparation and review of individual, trust and gift tax returns for high net worth individuals and their families;
    • Performing technical tax review and approval of all tax returns of any complexity;
    • Participating in client meetings and tax planning efforts for a variety of clients;
    • Acting as a resource for tax preparers/specialists on specific tax issues and/or questions;
    • Communicating to the appropriate firm personnel important tax and tax developments affecting the firm's clients;
    • Managing governmental tax examinations; may represent the client before the appropriate taxing authorities;
    • Supervising tax staff and providing on-the-job training;
    • Working to develop responsible, trained staff by assisting in recruiting, performance evaluations, developing training aids, and acting as an instructor in professional development programs;
    • Maintaining a knowledge of general economic and political trends of possible tax or other legislation that could affect the business climate;
    • Participating in firm's practice development efforts through involvement with referral sources, community and industry activities.

What we need from you:

    • 10+ years of experience in public accounting (tax), demonstrating a proven ability in handling tax complexity, scope, and research.
    • Prior leadership of client engagements and supervisory experience of managers and staff.
    • Required exposure to Forms 1040 (Individual return), 1041 (trust return), 1065 (partnership/LLC return), 1120S (S corporation return), and 709 (gift return).
    • Experience with forms 5227 (Split Interest Trust Information return) and 706 (Estate return) would be a plus.
    • Excellent oral & written communication skills.
    • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and use good judgment.
    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Creative thinker with entrepreneurial approach to client interactions, including tax planning and bringing value to clients.
    • Willingness to lead firm or tax department initiatives and be seen as a leader in the tax department.  

What skills & experience you’ll bring to us:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or related equivalent.
    • Masters of Science degree in Taxation or a J.D. highly preferred
    • CPA certification or active law license required.

GHJ complies with all local/state regulations in regards to displaying salary ranges. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, ranges, applicant's skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications (e.g. JD, technology), for example. At GHJ, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is: $192,900 – $347,100.
