About This Role

General Matter is looking for an experienced Head of IT with strong knowledge and experience across IT technologies. The Head of IT will oversee the company's IT systems, implement best practices, and drive technology initiatives that align with our business goals. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring our infrastructure scales as we grow while maintaining security, efficiency, and reliability. The ideal candidate will be flexible and flourish in a fast paced and challenging environment and will exercise a high degree of responsibility for the processes, systems, and tools you create and manage; all supporting the goal of ensuring the country has the fuel it needs to power its nuclear reactors. 

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with General Matter engineers to gather requirements, research, evaluate, design, plan, deploy, and support Microsoft enterprise software platforms and related technologies in a world-class environment that meets the needs of the demanding General Matter engineering teams. 
  • Manage and maintain highly resilient, high-performance, scalable, and flexible systems. 
  • Make recommendations, justify, and implement improvements using an accepted change control methodology. 
  • Work within diverse groups to design and deliver creative solutions and resolve problems in a timely and proactive manner by interacting with internal business units. 
  • Define, document and follow standards and best practices for systems design, testing, and implementation. 
  • Responsible for the health of the IT core infrastructure:  
  • Ensure uptime of critical systems to the business 
  • Drive improvements to optimize security and performance of the infrastructure 
  • Build automation at scale to improve overall efficiency 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or engineering discipline with 3+ years of systems administration experience; OR 5+ years of professional systems administration experience in lieu of a degree. 
  • Experience with servers in physical and virtualized environments. 
  • 5+ years of experience with Active Directory, Kerberos, Entra ID, and multi-platform authentication/identification environments 
  • 5+ years of experience (including the ability to setup, configure, upgrade, manage, and troubleshoot) with Windows-based systems and services in both physical and virtual environments. 
  • 5+ years of experience in monitoring mission-critical enterprise environments 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Expertise in creating repeatable, reliable, scalable systems architectures, with high availability, fault tolerance, performance tuning, monitoring, and statistics/metrics collection.
  • Understanding of developing web, python, Powershell, and bash scripting applications and build processes.
  • Experience with linux administration.
  • Experience with automation platforms (Ansible, Salt, Chef).
  • Networking experience in IPv4, IPSEC VPN, SSL-VPN, SD-WAN, switching, routing, firewalls and HA architecture.
  • Comfortable working with mission critical and sensitive systems, with a sense of urgency appropriate to the responsibilities.
  • Excellent communications skills with the ability to communicate with internal/external customers, vendors, management etc. in both formal and informal situations.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.

Compensation and Benefits

The base salary range for this role is $200,000-$260,000 annually. 

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at General Matter. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock options. You will also receive access to comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, HSA/FSA/Commuter benefits, and various other benefits. General Matter also offers all employees an 'Unlimited Time Off' policy.
