Magic’s mission is to build safe AGI that accelerates humanity’s progress on the world’s most important problems. We believe the most promising path to safe AGI lies in automating research and code generation to improve models and solve alignment more reliably than humans can alone. Our approach combines frontier-scale pre-training, domain-specific RL, ultra-long context, and inference-time compute to achieve this goal.

About the role

As Head of IT at Magic, you will own the systems that keep the company productive and secure. This is a hands-on leadership role. You’ll lead a small IT team and set the technical direction for the function while remaining deeply involved in the work, from building automations and architecting systems to administering critical infrastructure and responding to incidents.

Automation is central to the role. You’ll build on our existing investment in automation to make IT increasingly self-service, reliable, and scalable, while deciding where and how to take it further.

What you'll work on
  • Own the function end-to-end: systems, endpoints, identity, SaaS, office infrastructure, support, and IT security

  • Lead a small team and set the technical direction, priorities, and standards

  • Make automation the default, eliminating toil and enabling self-service

  • Own our core stack, including SSO, SCIM, MFA, MDM, Google Workspace, and Slack

  • Partner with Security on least privilege, endpoint protection, patching, vulnerability management, and incident response

  • Own office technology across our locations, including networking, AV, conference rooms, and physical security

  • Build scalable IT systems, processes, and controls as Magic grows

What we're looking for
  • Experience owning and scaling IT functions in a fast-paced technical environment

  • A hands-on leader who can set direction, develop a small team, and be a strong technical contributor

  • Deep experience with macOS, MDM, Google Workspace, SaaS, identity, and access

  • Expertise using automation, APIs, AI tools, and Bash/Python to eliminate manual work

  • Strong security experience across endpoints, identity, access, vulnerability management, and incident response

  • Strong judgment and first-principles thinking; you evaluate solutions on their merits rather than defaulting to convention

  • Willingness to work beyond traditional IT boundaries, learn new domains, and contribute wherever needed to build holistic solutions

Our Culture
  • Integrity. Words and actions should be aligned

  • Hands-on. At Magic, everyone is building

  • Teamwork. We move as one team, not N individuals

  • Focus. Safely deploy AGI. Everything else is noise

  • Quality. Magic should feel like magic

Magic strives to be the place where high-potential individuals can do their best work. We value quick learning and grit just as much as skill and experience.

Compensation, benefits, and perks (US)
  • Annual salary range: $200K - $350K

  • Equity is a significant part of total compensation, in addition to salary

  • 401(k) plan with 6% salary matching

  • Generous health, dental and vision insurance for you and your dependents

  • Unlimited paid time off

  • Visa sponsorship and relocation stipend to bring you to SF, if possible

  • A small, fast-paced, highly focused team

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
