Electrical Engineer - Instrumentation & Controls 

As an Controls Design Engineer focused on electrical design for our industrial controls systems, you will be a flexible, high-leverage member of the Instrumentation & Controls team, supporting a range of test, prototype, and facility efforts as priorities evolve. This is an experienced, electrical-design-first role centered on rigorous, high-quality electrical documentation using EPLAN. You'll design control panels, instrumentation, and wiring for test systems, prototypes, and plant systems, own our EPLAN standards and library, and help set the higher-level electrical architecture across our programs as the team scales. We expect you to operate with significant autonomy and to raise the bar for electrical design quality across the team. Note: This role is not focused on PCB or motor design, which are handled by a separate electrical engineering team.  

Responsibilities

  • Design, document, and integrate electrical and controls systems for test setups, prototypes, and plant systems, adapting across projects as priorities shift. 
  • Produce high-quality electrical schematics, control panel designs, wiring diagrams, harness documentation, and I/O documentation in EPLAN Electric P8. 
  • Develop and maintain EPLAN standards, templates, and part libraries to raise the team's overall EPLAN utilization and consistency. 
  • Design control panel schematics and layouts, including UL508A-style panels and safety-instrumented systems where required. 
  • Support build, wiring, integration, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems across R&D and facility deployments. 
  • Collaborate with the controls software and test teams as electrical and software design workstreams diverge, keeping electrical design as the primary focus. 
  • Develop technical documentation and specifications for internal use, vendors, and contractors. 

Basic Qualifications

  • Deep, demonstrated proficiency with EPLAN Electric P8 for schematics, control panel design, wiring diagrams, and electrical documentation. 
  • Experience with EPLAN Pro Panel, Cable proD, and/or Harness proD. 
  • 5+ years of electrical design experience for industrial control systems
  • Startup or fast-paced, high-ownership engineering experience — comfort with ambiguity, rapid iteration, and loosely-defined scope. 
  • Working knowledge of industrial instrumentation, control panel design, and industrial communications protocols (e.g., EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, CAN bus). 
  • Ability to perform trade studies, reason from first principles, and make sound engineering decisions with incomplete information. 
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills for cross-functional collaboration. 
  • Evidence of exceptional ability (prior projects, portfolio of work, completed products, etc.)
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline. 

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience designing electrical systems for test stands, automated test equipment, or prototype hardware. 
  • Control panel design experience, including UL508A panels and SIL-rated safety systems. 
  • Familiarity with AC power systems, including breakers, relays, transformers, and three-phase power. 
  • Hands-on experience building, wiring, or commissioning industrial electrical systems. 
  • Some familiarity with structured-text or PLC programming, though deep software experience is not required. 

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.

Compensation and Benefits: 

The base salary range for this role is $100,000–$200,000 annually. 

This role is fully onsite and compensation bands are determined by role, level, and alignment with market data to the LA area. Individual level and base pay is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, technical capabilities and internal equity. Please note that the stated salary range is an estimate and may be adjusted based on market conditions, business needs, or other factors. In addition to base salary, for full-time hires, you may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of stock options, and access to medical, vision & dental coverage as well as access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
