About the Role
We are looking for a Director of Sales Engineering in the Bay Area to lead and scale Firebolt’s global Sales Engineering function. This role owns the technical pre-sales motion end-to-end and partners closely with Sales, Engineering, and Product leadership to drive enterprise adoption.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can operate at the executive level while still rolling up their sleeves in complex deals. You will lead a team of 5–6 Sales Engineers globally, set technical sales strategy, and ensure Firebolt consistently wins highly technical evaluations.
What You’ll Do
- Lead, coach, and scale a high-performing global Sales Engineering team (currently 5–6)
- Own the technical pre-sales lifecycle, including discovery, architecture, demos, POCs, and evaluations
- Partner closely with Sales leadership on account strategy, deal qualification, and execution
- Serve as an executive technical voice with customers, especially in complex or strategic deals
- Act as a tight feedback loop between customers, Product, and Engineering to influence roadmap
- Define best practices for technical selling, enablement, and SE hiring as the team scales
- Support GTM expansion across regions while maintaining a high technical bar and consistent customer experience
- 8+ years of experience in Sales Engineering, Solutions Engineering, or Technical Pre-Sales
- Prior experience leading and scaling Sales Engineering teams
- Strong background selling highly technical products (data platforms, databases, analytics, infrastructure, cloud, or adjacent technologies)
- Comfortable engaging with senior technical buyers (VP Engineering, CTO, Head of Data, etc.)
- Ability to translate deep technical concepts into clear business value
- Proven track record of influencing large, complex enterprise deals
- Experience working cross-functionally with Product and Engineering teams
- Experience selling data infrastructure, analytics platforms, or database technologies
- Exposure to AI, real-time analytics, or large-scale distributed systems
- Experience supporting global or multi-region GTM teams
The pay range listed below reflects the base salary for this role. In addition to base pay, this position is eligible to participate in our commission plan and stock option program, forming part of the total on-target earnings (OTE).
As part of our compensation philosophy, total compensation is tailored to each candidate and influenced by factors such as job-related skills, level of experience, relevant certifications, and geographic location.
- Base Salary Range: $175,000 – $225,000
- Commission Plan: Eligible to participate in the company’s commission plan; base salary typically represents approximately 70% of the total on-target earnings (OTE)
- Equity: Incentive Stock Options (ISOs), subject to a four-year vesting schedule with a one-year cliff
The actual compensation package will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and geographic location and may vary within the stated range.
