The Clinical Nurse II – Perioperative role provides direct patient care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act for assigned patients in a Perioperative unit. The nurse collaborates with other disciplines of the health care team to ensure the delivery of safe, timely and appropriate quality patient care. This includes providing physical assessments, nursing interventions, pain management, medication administrations, specimen collection, meeting nutritional needs, and teaching and discharge needs of the patients assigned. Utilizes the nursing process based on evidence-based best practices to meet patient care needs. Evaluates and adjusts the nursing care process as necessary with consultation as needed, and confers with the appropriate resource personnel when making ethical/legal/medical dilemma decisions. Performs other duties as assigned.

Additionally, the Clinical Nurse II meets the requirements outlined in the Clinical Ladder program respective to his/her department. The Clinical Nurse III demonstrates a commitment to hospital involvement and professional growth by participating in committees, attending related meetings, and presenting education projects and/or supplemental activities.

Responsibilities

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides direct care to high-acuity cardiac patients.
  • Coordinates with perfusionists, anesthesiologists, and surgeons.
  • Prepares OR and verifies specialized cardiac equipment.
  • Maintains sterile field and monitors vitals/hemodynamics.
  • Manages blood coolers and assists with advanced cardiac devices.
  • Responds to emergencies (e.g., cardiac arrest, hemorrhage).
  • Documents intraoperative events and ensures proper handoff to PACU/CVICU staff.
  • Participates in on-call coverage as required, with a response time of 30- minutes of notification.
  • Precepts and mentors new CVOR Nurse I staff.
  • Assists in troubleshooting surgical equipment and cardiac devices.
  • Participates in case reviews and contributes to continuous improvement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned 
QualificationsEducation and Experience

Required: 

  • BSN program is started within one year of hire date and BSN degree is attained within two years of the starting the BSN program. 
  • Minimum 1-2 Years Cardiovascular Operating Room experience in an acute care hospital
  • Familiarity with heart-lung machines, intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impella, pacemakers, and other cardiovascular support devices.
  • Understanding of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and surgical procedures (e.g., CABG, valve replacements, aortic repairs).

License Required

  • Registered Nurse in the State of California - Current and in good standing.

License Preferred:

  • N/A

Certifications Required:

  • Current BLS certification prior to clinical rotation. 
  • ACLS within 6 months of hire.

Certifications Preferred:

  • CNOR Certification
