Job Title: Assistant Controller

Job Summary:

The Assistant Controller is a hands-on accounting leader who handles the full accounting cycle for Gregg Drilling and Pitcher Services and manages the accounting staff, who report to this role. This person closes the books each month and prepares the financial statements, reconciles every balance sheet account, handles intercompany billing and consolidation, maintains fixed assets, and keeps tax and licensing filings current, doing much of this work directly while reviewing and developing the team. The Controller owns the WIP schedule, budgeting, and forecasting, reviews the financial statements, and decides when they are released. The Assistant Controller is the Controller’s second-in-command and the first point of contact for accounting questions from operations and project management.

Only California applicants will be considered. This will be a hybrid role.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Close and Financial Reporting

  • Run the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close: maintain the close calendar, assign and track tasks, and deliver draft financial statements for both entities on schedule.
  • Prepare consolidated financial statements, including intercompany eliminations, with a variance analysis explaining significant changes.
  • Load the approved annual budget and monthly forecast into the accounting system, and prepare the monthly budget-to-actual report for Controller and Operations review.
  • Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and expense allocations, making sure each is supported, correctly coded, and compliant with US GAAP.

Reconciliations and Internal Controls

  • Perform and oversee monthly reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts, including bank, AR, AP subledger to GL, Job Cost to GL, intercompany, fixed assets, lease, and accrual accounts; resolve differences promptly.
  • Maintain written accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls, including appropriate segregation of duties.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for external auditors: coordinate the annual audit and interim requests, prepare supporting schedules, and resolve findings. Respond to corporate reporting requests.

Intercompany, Fixed Assets, and Cash

  • Prepare monthly intercompany billing between Gregg Drilling and Pitcher Services and keep intercompany balances reconciled.
  • Manage daily banking and cash receipts application.

Tax, Licensing, and Compliance

  • Perform city, county, state, sales/use, and property tax filings in every state where the companies work.
  • Manage contractor licenses and third party licensing for business registrations.
  • Work with payroll on prevailing wage and union-related items that affect job cost and billing.

Team and Systems

  • Supervise the accounting staff (Project Accounting, AP, and AR): assign and review work, train, set expectations, and complete performance reviews.
  • Serve as the accounting lead month-end processes, user support, and process improvements.
  • Answer accounting questions from project managers and operations, and help them understand job cost results.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Has run a month-end close, including reconciliations and journal entries, and produced financial statements with limited supervision

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
