After planting itself in California in 2010, e-commerce tech giant Amazon has spent over a decade deepening its West Coast roots. Operating an expansive network of tech hubs, the employer of more than 170,000 people statewide announced plans to expand its presence even further. Targeting several cities across Southern California, Amazon is creating thousands of new jobs in areas from technology to logistics.

The company is expanding its tech hub locations in the LA area including Santa Monica and Irvine, as well as in San Diego. In the coming years, Amazon plans to add over 2,500 roles spanning teams across retail, Amazon Games, Amazon Web Services and operations.

In Santa Monica, the company is creating over 1,000 corporate and tech career opportunities. Amazon just rented 200,000 square feet of space at the Water Garden. The office is scheduled to open sometime in the middle of next year.

Amazon is also growing in Irvine, and it booked a 116,000-square-foot space at Spectrum Terrace to accommodate its new employees. This location, which will open for employees later this year, will house more than 800 new roles in the coming years.

For its San Diego tech hub, Amazon is expanding at University Town Center with plans to add 700 names to its 1,000-person roster already there. This 123,000-square-foot office will open in early 2023.

These developments follow Amazon’s creation of over 17,000 statewide jobs throughout 2021. The company currently has more than 15 sites across the SoCal region.

“Communities across California have welcomed Amazon over the past decade and have seen firsthand how our investments can unlock new opportunities for their neighbors and local economies,” Holly Sullivan, Amazon’s VP of worldwide economic development, said in a statement. “These 2,500 new jobs include roles building cloud infrastructure, improving the Alexa experience and designing cutting edge video games. They’re a fantastic opportunity for Californians of all backgrounds to join Amazon and build a successful career.”

Aside from job creation, Amazon has spearheaded a number of initiatives for California communities over the years. Some of these endeavors include donating to organizations like the Orange County Children’s Hospital and the Surfrider Foundation. Amazon also runs an education program called Amazon Future Engineers in 600 schools across the state that introduces students to computer science and coding.

Since establishing itself in California, Amazon has invested more than $81 billion in facilities across the state including fulfillment centers, Whole Foods Market locations and its three Tech Hubs.

Amazon is currently hiring for a number of its new positions. Available roles span departments including software development, game design, UX, HR, finance, IT and more.
