About the job

The Real Deal is looking for a West Coast or California Bureau Chief to join a rapidly growing business newsroom focused on real estate.

The Bureau Chief would be responsible for writing original news stories, producing in-depth features for our monthly magazine, editing key market stories, and helping to shape and guide our coverage of the real estate industry.

The ideal candidate is a player-coach who wants to report out their own stories while also working alongside other reporters to direct coverage and sharpen their skills. They will have experience covering business, money and power and a keen desire to reveal the inner workings of a complex industry and mine its intersections with politics, finance, law, entertainment and other areas of the business world.

A sharp news sense is a must, as is experience in business journalism. The ability to break news, cultivate sources, pitch story ideas and write clean copy on deadline are key skills. Past experience editing news stories, guiding news teams and mentoring is a plus.

Job Responsibilities

  • Contribute two to four original articles per week to The Real Deal’s coverage of the real estate industry, focusing on the West Coast (both Los Angeles and San Francisco).
  • Lead daily news scrums to direct coverage for a team of three California-based reporters.
  • Pick up edits on key stories, including both breaking news and web features.
  • Liaise with the New York headquarters to make sure the team is in line with editorial priorities.
  • Occasionally contribute longer (~2,000 word) stories for The Real Deal’s monthly, national magazine.

Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated writing, interviewing and reporting skills
  • Ability to produce clean, well-organized and accurate copy on deadline, ranging from breaking news to long-form features and investigations
  • Ability to write with voice and authority
  • Ability to quickly learn a complex financial beat, sourcing up in the industry and learning the ins and outs of residential and commercial real estate and real estate development
  • Ability to lead a team, directing reporters towards the most important stories, identifying the important narratives within them, and providing both conceptual feedback on ideas and practical line edits on filed drafts
  • Understanding of and adherence to journalistic standards, ethics and protocol
  • Ability to juggle and prioritize multiple assignments
  • Ability to do on-camera interviews, host TRD videos and moderate live events is a plus

Compensation & Benefits:
The salary offered within this range will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
