As we enter our next stage of growth, we’re looking for a VP of Finance to shape the financial strategy, infrastructure, and discipline needed to scale the business responsibly. As the executive leader for Finance, you’ll help guide enterprise priorities, strengthen financial performance, and ensure leaders have the insight needed to make sound decisions for the long-term health of Philz.

You’ll connect our financial strategy to what’s happening across our stores, customers, and teams; translating complex financial information into clear business direction, strengthening financial discipline, and helping leaders make thoughtful decisions about growth, investment, and long-term value creation.

This role is currently remote and must be based within the Greater Los Angeles area. Our teams will return to a hybrid office environment in early 2027.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Financial Strategy, Planning & Performance Management

  • Lead the Finance departments with responsibility for financial planning and analysis, financial reporting, business intelligence, treasury, and financial controls
  • Serve as a strategic financial advisor to executive leadership, bringing a clear financial perspective to business priorities, investments, risks, and growth opportunities
  • Lead the annual budget, rolling forecast, and long-range planning processes, grounded in key business drivers such as traffic, sales, labor, product costs, pricing, and store-level performance
  • Establish clear financial targets, performance measures, and operating rhythms that strengthen accountability across the organization
  • Deliver clear, actionable reporting on weekly, monthly, and quarterly performance, highlighting key trends, risks, opportunities, and recommended actions
  • Lead scenario planning and sensitivity analysis to help leaders evaluate strategic choices and respond effectively to changing business conditions
  • Prepare and present financial results, business insights, and strategic recommendations to executive leadership, the Board, and ownership stakeholders

Reporting & Financial Governance

  • Lead relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, banking partners, insurance providers, and other financial partners
  • Oversee cash flow forecasting, liquidity management, treasury activities, and working capital performance
  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders on tax planning, compliance, and other financial governance matters
  • Identify and implement process, system, automation, and AI-enabled improvements that increase the accuracy, efficiency, and scalability of Finance and Accounting operations

Business Intelligence, Capital Allocation & Growth Strategy

  • Elevate business intelligence capabilities by developing dashboards, reporting tools, and performance insights that enable faster, more informed decisions
  • Lead financial modeling and analysis for new store openings, market expansion, product and channel strategies, marketing investments, and other growth initiatives
  • Partner with senior leadership to evaluate capital allocation decisions and prioritize investments based on strategic value, financial return, risk, and organizational capacity
  • Develop long-range financial plans that connect growth strategy to operational requirements, resource needs, and expected financial outcomes
  • Identify opportunities to improve sales, margins, labor efficiency, working capital, and store-level economics while supporting a strong customer and employee experience
  • Collaborate with operations leaders to strengthen store-level performance and improve the financial visibility available to field and corporate teams

Executive Partnership & Team Development

  • Partner closely with leaders across operations, marketing, supply chain, people, technology, development, and other functions to translate business strategies into measurable financial plans
  • Bring a balanced perspective to decision-making, combining financial discipline with an understanding of customers, culture, operations, and long-term goals
  • Communicate complex financial information clearly and credibly to executive leaders, operational teams, Board members, and other stakeholders
  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing, curious, agile, and business-minded Finance team
  • Establish clear roles, priorities, performance expectations, and development opportunities across the Finance team
  • Foster a collaborative, solutions-oriented function that helps teams understand performance, evaluate tradeoffs, manage risk, and take informed action

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 12+ years of progressive finance experience, including significant leadership experience overseeing Finance
  • Experience leading finance within a multi-unit retail, restaurant, hospitality, or consumer-facing organization
  • Demonstrated success advising executive leaders and influencing enterprise-level business, operational, and investment decisions
  • Strong experience leading annual planning, rolling forecasts, long-range financial planning, scenario analysis, and performance management
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting requirements
  • Understanding of multi-unit economics, including sales drivers, labor, product costs, inventory, margins, store-level profitability, and capital investment
  • Experience supporting Board, investor, lender, or private equity stakeholder reporting and financial analysis
  • Demonstrated experience building, leading, and developing a high-performing Finance team
  • Expertise in financial modeling, forecasting, performance analysis, and translating financial information into clear business recommendations
  • Experience with ERP, financial planning, and business intelligence tools, such as NetSuite, Tableau, Power BI, Alteryx, or similar platforms, along with advanced Excel skills
  • Experience using automation or AI-enabled tools to improve financial analysis, reporting, and decision-making is a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, or a related field; MBA, CPA, or other advanced qualification preferred
  • Collaborative, low-ego leadership approach with strong executive communication and stakeholder-management skills
  • Ability to move between long-term strategy and hands-on execution in a dynamic, growing organization
  • Ability to connect financial performance to real-world operational, customer, and employee impact
  • Experience working in a private equity-backed or other investor-supported organization is preferred

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
