The Vice President, Research & Development leads the R&D organization for OnePulse, a healthcare software portfolio of more than eight products. This executive is responsible for creating a consistent and effective approach to technology strategy, engineering execution, quality, reliability, and technical operations while recognizing the different needs, maturity levels, and technologies of each product.

The VP of R&D partners closely with Product to translate market priorities, customer needs, and roadmap direction into executable technical plans. The ideal candidate combines strong technical judgment, operational discipline, business acumen, and the ability to lead geographically dispersed teams through meaningful change, including the adoption of AI enabled ways of working.

This position leads the OnePulse R&D organization and is responsible for organizational design, workforce planning, hiring, performance management, leadership development, succession planning, retention, and effective use of employees, contractors, and partners across a geographically dispersed team.

The role is remote eligible to anyone in the U.S.

Responsibilities & Duties:

• Create and maintain a portfolio level technology strategy across more than eight products, balancing stability, modernization, customer commitments, regulatory expectations, and growth opportunities.

• Partner with other business leaders to translate product priorities into realistic technical roadmaps, capacity plans, sequencing, and investment recommendations.

• Provide technical and architectural leadership across products built with varied technology stacks, programming languages, databases, hosting models, integration patterns, and legacy constraints.

• Own engineering execution, including planning, delivery predictability, release management, quality engineering, product reliability, incident learning, and technical escalation.

• Establish practical engineering standards and governance while allowing appropriate flexibility for each product and technology environment.

• Develop a pragmatic modernization approach grounded in customer value, business continuity, risk reduction, maintainability, and financial reality.

• Rethink the software development lifecycle for an AI enabled environment, applying AI across development, testing, documentation, operations, and engineering decision making.

• Establish appropriate AI guardrails for security, privacy, intellectual property, data handling, compliance, risk, governance, and human review, and measure whether adoption improves quality, throughput, cycle time, or customer value.

• Lead, coach, and develop a geographically dispersed R&D organization across products and time zones, with clear decision rights, goals, accountability, succession plans, and reduced key person dependencies.

• Own R&D budgets, forecasts, workforce plans, vendor decisions, and investment tradeoffs, connecting technology decisions to customer impact and business outcomes.

• Work effectively across Product, Customer Success, Support, Professional Services, Hosting, Security, Sales, Finance, and other operating teams to improve execution and customer outcomes.

• Act as the senior point of escalation for R&D issues and communicate technical choices, risks, costs, timing, and consequences clearly to executive leadership.

• Travel: as required for customer, team, leadership, user group, and industry meetings

What we look for:
• 5+ years of experience with healthcare interoperability, clinical data, EHR, practice management, patient engagement, analytics, revenue cycle, or adjacent healthcare software domains.

• 8+ years of experience in a Leadership role, particularly in the healthcare software industry.

• 1-3 years of experience integrating acquired products, teams, processes, or technology platforms.

• 1-3 years of experience creating shared engineering capabilities that can be reused across otherwise different product lines.

• Experience applying AI to improve engineering productivity, software quality, delivery efficiency, operational effectiveness, or decision making.

• Ability to travel 10% annually for customer meetings, industry trainings, and Leadership planning sessions.

• Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits

• 3 weeks of vacation plus 5 personal days to recharge

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
