The Quantum Software Engineer will develop software for device control, automate processes, analyze data, and collaborate in a research environment.
General Description:
We are seeking a motivated and organized Quantum Software Engineer to join a newly formed research effort, Universal Control of Scaled Spin Systems (UCS3), under the leadership of Prof. Jason Petta (HRL and UCLA). This unique effort will combine the fast-paced and agile approach of an academic research environment with the abilities and scale of industrial technology development, with an emphasis on publishing achievements. The team’s technical objective is to transition “Loss-DiVincenzo” single spin qubits from academic scale few-qubit devices to industrial-scale quantum information processors. Research will initially take place on HRL’s Malibu campus and is expected to transition to UCLA’s Quantum Innovation Hub in two to three years. As a software engineer on the UCS3 team, you will be responsible for developing software to control, characterize, and automate the operation of our devices.
Essential Duties:
Develop and maintain software to support experimental development and data analysis, including software to control signal generation and measurement hardware.
Develop algorithmic software techniques to automate device tuning and calibration.
Analyze results, document and report findings in oral presentations, written reports, and publications.
Effectively collaborate with other members of the team to identify and implement improvements to control software.
Interface effectively with staff at academic partner institutions.
Required Skills:
Several years of relevant software engineering experience, a solid understanding of core computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, computer architectures), proficiency with Python, experience with software engineering practices such as version control and continuous integration, experience with machine learning, and some experience with electronic control equipment.
Required Education:
Expected experience of BA/BS + 6 years of industry experience, MS + 4 years of industry experience, or doctoral degree. Candidates with different experience levels may be considered for other positions.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work at a computer for extended periods.
Special Requirements:
US citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain US Government security clearance

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene
Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.
Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech
- Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
- Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
- Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
- Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
- Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
- Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
