Technical Writer & Instructional Designer

Remote | Full-Time Contract (40 hours/week)

About the Role

We are seeking a Technical Writer & Instructional Designer to develop technical workshops, developer documentation, and hands-on learning experiences focused on AI systems and emerging developer technologies.

In this role, you will translate complex technical concepts, tools, and existing training materials into clear, practical resources that enable developers and technical teams to effectively build with large language models (LLMs), APIs, and vector database systems.

You will own the end-to-end development of technical learning content, including curriculum design, hands-on exercises, workshop materials, API and SDK documentation, and instructor guides. Working closely with engineering, product, and research teams, you will ensure materials are technically accurate, accessible, and aligned with real-world developer workflows.

This is a hands-on, high-ownership role for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of technical writing, developer education, and AI. The ideal candidate is comfortable navigating evolving technologies, independently driving content development, and making sophisticated technical systems easier to understand and use.

What You'll Do
  • Design and develop hands-on technical workshops focused on LLMs, AI developer tools, APIs, and vector database systems.
  • Own curriculum development, including learning objectives, workshop structure, technical prerequisites, and instructional materials.
  • Create technical documentation, presentations, interactive exercises, code walkthroughs, lab guides, and instructor resources.
  • Develop and maintain clear, accurate API, SDK, and developer tooling documentation to support technical users.
  • Translate complex AI and software engineering concepts into accessible, practical learning experiences for developer audiences.
  • Evaluate existing technical content, identify documentation gaps, and improve clarity, consistency, and usability.
  • Collaborate with engineering partners to validate technical accuracy, test workshop exercises, and ensure documentation reflects actual product capabilities.
  • Partner with engineering, product, and research teams to understand evolving tools, workflows, and technical requirements.
  • Independently manage content development, coordinate technical reviews, and incorporate feedback to continuously improve learning materials.
What We're Looking For
  • 3+ years of experience in technical writing, instructional design, developer education, technical curriculum development, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience creating hands-on technical workshops, developer training materials, and comprehensive technical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of LLMs, generative AI, prompting, APIs, and vector database systems.
  • Experience developing technical content for software engineers, application developers, platform engineers, or similarly technical audiences.
  • Exceptional technical writing and editing skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly without sacrificing technical accuracy.
  • Ability to read, understand, and explain code examples in Python, TypeScript, or similar programming languages.
  • Familiarity with software development workflows, including Git/GitHub, Markdown/MDX, version control, and testing.
  • Experience collaborating with engineers to validate technical documentation, troubleshoot exercises, and improve developer learning experiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to independently manage multiple content deliverables in a fast-moving environment.
  • A portfolio showcasing technical writing, developer documentation, instructional materials, or hands-on technical workshops.
Nice to Have
  • Experience developing educational content or documentation for AI/ML platforms, developer tools, or emerging AI technologies.
  • Familiarity with AI safety, model evaluations, LLM testing, or responsible AI development.
  • Experience with vector databases, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), embeddings, or agentic AI workflows.
  • Experience with documentation platforms, static site generators, or documentation-as-code workflows.
  • Previous experience working with AI research teams, developer platforms, or early-stage technology companies.
Additional Information
  • Employment Type: 6 Month contract, with possibility of extension
  • Compensation: $95,000 - $125,000 ($45/hr to $60/hr)
  • Location: Remote
  • Benefits: Eligible after 90 days

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
