This is a hands-on role requiring strong partnership tax knowledge, real estate expertise, and the ability to oversee complex tax reporting across a sizable investment portfolio.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare year-end tax projections, tax estimates, and K-1 estimates.
  • Review tax workpapers, tax returns, and payment vouchers prepared by third-party CPA firms.
  • Review and monitor 704(b) and tax capital accounts for both closed-end and open-end funds.
  • Ensure timely filing of tax returns, notices, and payments.

Tax Accounting & Compliance

  • Prepare annual ASC 740 reporting packages and related tax provision calculations.
  • Maintain joint venture entity and fund-level tax leverage analyses, registers, and supporting schedules.
  • Monitor REIT and Opportunity Zone compliance processes, including review of related compliance workpapers.
  • Assist with tax withholding compliance, including E&P calculations and review of Form 1042 filings.
  • Prepare and/or review responses to tax notices received from federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Research technical tax matters and prepare supporting memoranda as needed.

Partnership Tax & Fund Economics

  • Maintain and review complex partnership tax allocations across fund and joint venture structures.
  • Reconcile book-to-tax differences and maintain 704(b) and tax capital accounts.
  • Create, maintain, and update advanced Excel-based tax waterfall models.
  • Support tax planning and analysis across fund structures and investment vehicles.

Investor & Cross-Functional Support

  • Assist with investor inquiries related to tax estimates, projections, and reporting.
  • Partner closely with the Asset Management team on tax matters and ad hoc requests.
  • Coordinate with third-party CPA firms, property managers, joint venture partners, and other external service providers.
  • Work collaboratively across Tax, Accounting, Asset Management, and other internal teams to ensure accurate and timely reporting.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of progressive tax accounting experience, with meaningful experience in the real estate industry and complex investment fund structures.
  • CPA required.
  • Advanced knowledge of partnership taxation.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing tax workpapers and tax returns, including reconciliation of book-to-tax differences.
  • Hands-on experience maintaining 704(b) and tax capital accounts for closed-end and open-end funds.
  • Experience with real estate joint ventures, fund structures, REITs, and/or Opportunity Zone investments.
  • Experience with ASC 740 tax provision reporting.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including the ability to create and maintain complex tax waterfall models.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines across a complex investment platform.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and proactive, with a high level of ownership.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively across internal teams and external partners.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
