Design, analyze, and deliver primary and secondary aircraft structures for hypersonic vehicles from trade studies through detailed design, manufacturing, integration, and flight test. Perform structural trade studies, generate CAD models and GD&T, collaborate on stress/fatigue/thermal assessments, support fabrication and testing, participate in design reviews, and iterate with test/flight feedback.
Hermeus is a high-speed aircraft manufacturer focused on the rapid design, build, and test of high-Mach and hypersonic aircraft for the national interest. Working directly with the Department of Defense, Hermeus delivers capabilities that will ensure that our nation, and our allies, maintain an asymmetric advantage over any and all potential adversaries.
As a Structures Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, analysis, and delivery of primary and secondary aircraft structures for hypersonic vehicles. You will own hardware from early trade studies through detailed design, manufacturing, integration, and flight test, working closely with propulsion, aerothermal, manufacturing, and test teams.
This role requires strong fundamentals in structural design, comfort operating in ambiguous problem spaces, and the ability to move quickly while maintaining engineering discipline.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop primary and secondary aircraft structures, including fuselage, wings, control surfaces, and supporting structure
- Perform structural trade studies considering weight, strength, stiffness, thermal environment, manufacturability, and cost
- Generate detailed CAD models, drawings, and GD&T for flight and test hardware
- Collaborate with analysis engineers on stress, fatigue, fracture, and thermal-structural assessments
- Work closely with manufacturing to support fabrication, assembly, and tooling development
- Support vehicle integration, ground testing, and flight test activities, including troubleshooting hardware issues
- Participate in design reviews and contribute to system-level architectural decisions
- Drive rapid iteration cycles and incorporate test and flight feedback into design improvements
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- 3+ years of experience in structural design of aerospace vehicles or high-performance mechanical systems
- Proficiency with CAD tools (NX, CATIA, or equivalent)
- Strong understanding of structural fundamentals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering
- Experience with high-temperature materials, metallic and welded structures
- Familiarity with hypersonic, high-speed, or high-thermal-load environments
- Experience supporting structural testing and/or flight hardware
- Knowledge of aerospace standards, qualification, and verification processes
- Hands-on experience with hardware assembly or test

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene
Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.
Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech
- Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
- Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
- Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
- Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
