In this role, you will lead the development and maintenance of the overall data pipeline from the upstream data sources from the patients, prescribers and the pharmacies, to the downstream consumers that include our internal teams and external customers. You will have the autonomy to make key architectural decisions, consolidate our data infrastructure, and implement modern technologies from the ground up.

This role will take ownership of our core data-producing systems and be responsible for a major strategic project: evaluating our current data warehouse landscape and building the roadmap for a scalable, universal source of truth. We are looking for a hands-on technical leader with a founder's mentality who is excited to build a best-in-class data platform that will power our analytics, operations, and future AI-driven products.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, test, and launch PHIL’s backend data services and API platform for multiple client facing apps

  • Architect & Build: Design, build, and scale Phil's core data platform from the ground up, establishing the technical vision, roadmap, and data governance best practices.

  • Innovate & Modernize: Research, prototype, and implement modern data technologies. We are particularly interested in Apache Iceberg as a foundation for our future AI and data-sharing needs.

  • Partner Cross-Functionally: Act as the primary data engineering partner for software engineering, product, and analytics teams. You will collaborate on designing data-centric applications and provide the clean, reliable data that powers all business reporting.

  • Collaborate with product and analytics team to improve data quality and governance

  • Design and maintain data pipelines in Golang and Python

  • Optimize performance for data ingestion, transformation, and loading processes

  • Integrate data sources from Phil’s core application, Sales CRM, Inventory tracking, and more

  • Work collaboratively with remote Dev and QA teams reviewing implementation and answering queries about the platform

  • Deeply understand complex business processes and end user needs (internal and external, technical and nontechnical)

  • Make data at Phil easy to understand and work with - whether you're an experienced analyst or a pharmacist

  • Design and test validation frameworks, monitor the results and improve upon them

  • Deliver performant, reliable, scalable, testable, and secure code

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent experience)

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in software development, with focus on data.

  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering, software engineering, or a similar platform-focused role, with a proven track record of building systems from an early stage.

  • Deep Architectural Expertise: You have architected, built, and scaled data platforms. You have strong opinions, backed by experience, on data modeling, infrastructure, and system design.

  • Broad Technical Knowledge: You are an expert in modern data warehousing (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery) AND data lake/lakehouse technologies (e.g., S3, Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, Hudi).

  • Experience within the health-tech sector is a plus.

  • Strong Programming Skills: Experience building and maintaining secure, end-to-end systems and services. Experience in Golang, PostgresDB, and MongoDB is preferred.

  • Should enjoy working with data and understanding the relationship with the business. Comfortable writing standard, maintainable SQL, from the basics to window functions

  • Deep understanding of algorithms and efficient data structures

  • Experience working with all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle

  • Strong critical thinking, debugging and problem solving skills

  • A sense of ownership: you would develop, manage, and evolve the core logic of a mission-critical and consequential consumer experience

  • Experience with Looker, Snowflake and dbt is a plus

  • Experience building systems and services for health-tech company is preferred

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
