Role Summary

Join our Builder Platform Team as a Staff Software Engineer. Our mission is to empower a company of builders by delivering a frictionless, standardized, and governed platform for agents, workflows, and core engineering tools. We operate Temporal as customer zero: we partner directly with teams across the company to run their real work on the platform, measure the productivity it unlocks, and feed what we learn back into Temporal’s products and open-source frameworks our customers can adopt.

What You’ll Do
  • Own the strategy, architecture, and operation of our Agent Platform for deploying, running, evaluating, governing, and improving agents and agentic workflows, setting direction and ensuring reliability and scalability.

  • Architect the AI Infrastructure that agents depend on: LLM and MCP gateways with guardrails, fallback, usage and cost controls, and model rollout policies.

  • Design, build, and operate agents and workflows that carry engineering work from issue to production and business work from trigger to outcome, scaling them across teams and use cases.

  • Lead the development and evolution of our Developer Infrastructure (Source Control and CI) and the developer tools that improve builder flow and reduce friction across the company.

  • Partner closely with stakeholders across Engineering, Product, Sales, and G&A to identify high-impact opportunities where AI can accelerate work and improve outcomes.

  • Define best practices for agents and agentic tooling, build the enablement materials and paved roads behind them, and proactively drive adoption across the organization.

  • Establish and drive measurement and feedback loops (usage, reliability, and cost) to quantify the productivity the platform unlocks, inform prioritization, and shape the roadmap.

  • Lead our work as customer zero: turn what we learn into validated requirements for Temporal Cloud, the SDKs, and our Agent Harness, own the feedback loop with product leadership, and drive our contribution to an open-source reference architecture that customer platform teams can adopt.

  • Mentor and support engineers on the team, raising the bar on technical design, execution, and use of agents and agentic tooling.

  • Participate in on-call rotation, while identifying and driving improvements that reduce operational burden and improve the internal user experience.

What You’ll Bring
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals and a track record of leading the design, delivery, and operation of production-quality internal platforms or developer tooling.

  • Experience leveraging modern agentic coding tools such as Codex and Claude Code, including defining best practices and driving adoption across teams.

  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages commonly used at Temporal, such as Go, TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, or Java, with the ability to make pragmatic, high-leverage technical decisions.

  • Experience architecting and scaling workflow automation or internal tools (CLI tools, services, GitHub automation, cloud automation, or similar) used across teams or the organization.

  • Strong judgment about when to standardize versus when to enable flexibility, and how to remove friction without compromising reliability, security, or long-term maintainability.

  • Comfort leading cross-functional collaboration, including partnering with non-traditional developers and translating ambiguous needs into scalable, well-adopted solutions.

  • Ability to use data and qualitative feedback together to define success metrics, prioritize effectively, and measure impact.

  • Clear written communication, including documentation that enables self-service and scales knowledge across teams.

Nice to Haves
  • Experience building internal agents and operating an agent platform.

  • Experience building and operating Temporal applications.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
