Staff Engineer — Backend APIs
Los Angeles, CA
New York City, NY
Broomfield, CO
Hybrid Schedule (M/F remote, T/W/TH in-office)
At Magnite, we cultivate an environment of continuous growth and collaboration. Our work impacts what millions of people read, watch, and buy, and we’re looking for people to help us tackle that responsibility with creativity and focus. Magnite (NASDAQ: MGNI) is the world’s largest independent sell-side advertising platform. Publishers use our technology to monetize their content across all screens and formats including CTV / streaming, online video, display, and audio. Our tech fuels billions of transactions per day!
About this team:
Magnite’s Reporting & Insights group powers our flagship analytics products — Performance Analytics (PA), Prebid Analytics (PBA), and the SpringServe platform's reporting — and is building the next‑generation Unified Reporting API. We’re adding an experienced backend engineer to accelerate a high‑impact roadmap, elevate API developer experience, and partner closely with our UI and Data teams to ship features that our publishers and DSPs rely on to understand and optimize campaign performance.
In this role you will:
Design, build, and evolve microservice‑based API products that power reporting and analytics applications.
Manage individual project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables with your technical expertise
Collaborate daily with Product, UI, and Data engineers to take features end‑to‑end — from requirements and design to delivery.
Design and build APIs that are intuitive and easy to consume: clear contracts (OpenAPI/gRPC), well-documented, versioning strategies, pagination, filtering, batching, and strong SLAs/SLOs.
Shape data access patterns: schemas, query plans, caching, and performance tuning in read/writes for big data.
Champion code quality: well‑tested, observable, maintainable code, thoughtful reviews, design docs, and pragmatic documentation.
Own services in production: dashboards, alerting, capacity and load testing, cost‑aware design, and reliability improvements.
Leverage AI-assisted tools in your development process
Mentor teammates, share knowledge, and help raise the technical bar across the organization.
We’re looking for someone with:
8+ years of relevant work experience in software development.
Deep understanding of microservice fundamentals (service boundaries, resiliency, observability, CI/CD) and API design at scale.
Primary development experience in Java for high-throughput, low-latency back-end web services. Experience with asynchronous programming patterns, high levels of concurrency, and with frameworks such as Vert.x and Dropwizard is highly desirable.
Experience working in roles where project success was heavily dependent on your personal design and development contributions, your technical leadership and broad expertise.
A track record of shipping well‑tested, production‑grade APIs used by UI applications and direct API consumers.
Experience with development and CI tools like Maven, git, containerization with Docker, a build management system like Codebuild or Jenkins, and Jira
Clear, empathetic communication and a collaborative mindset.
Our current tech stack:
Exposure to cloud providers (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and container orchestration (Docker/Kubernetes).
Familiarity with functional programming concepts and Scala FP libraries.
Experience with event‑driven or streaming architectures.
Understanding of authN/Z patterns (OAuth2/JWT), rate limiting, and API security.
Observability tools and practices (metrics, tracing, logs) and load/perf testing.
Knowledge of Real-Time Bidding (RTB), SSPs, DSPs, and ad delivery systems is a strong plus.
Experience with Terraform or other infrastructure automation tools.
How we work:
Hybrid collaboration centered on our Los Angeles office with close partnership to US‑based Product, UI, and Data teams.
Pragmatic process: design docs, small PRs, automation over toil, and continuous learning.
A supportive culture that values mentorship, psychological safety, and outcomes over ego.
Perks and Benefits:
Comprehensive Healthcare Coverage from Day One
Generous Time Off
Holiday Breaks and Quarterly Wellness Days
Equity and Employee Stock Purchase Plan
Family-Focused Benefits and Parental Leave
401k Retirement Savings Plan with Employer Match
Disability and Life Insurance
