About the team

HCP Waypoint is designed to enable platform teams to define golden patterns and workflows for developers to enable management of applications at scale. HCP Waypoint and HCP Terraform work collaboratively to let developers quickly set up their apps' infrastructure with just a button press. The goal of Waypoint is to help platform teams provide a clear and consistent developer experience for their development teams while providing a central catalog of applications, day-2+ operations, and their associated metadata. HCP Waypoint is a rapidly evolving product with lofty aspirations.

The Waypoint engineering team is responsible for building HCP Waypoint on top of the HashiCorp Cloud Platform (HCP) integrating closely with HCP Terraform. We are a mix of backend and frontend engineers working alongside design and product management in a larger product line alongside Terraform, Vagrant, and Packer. We support a UI, CLI, Terraform Provider, and API. We are a small but mighty distributed and remote team that values cross-functional collaboration.

What you’ll do (responsibilities)
  • Guide the technical approach and architecture of Waypoint
  • Develop, advocate for, and support new and existing features for the Waypoint product
  • Collaborate closely with design, product, frontend, and your fellow backend engineers
  • Interface with our larger HCP ecosystem and design system
  • Provide code review, mentorship, and support to other engineers
  • Work on issues and improvements critical to the success of HashiCorp customers
  • Debug and resolve complex issues to improve the quality and stability of products or solutions
  • Review and assess code for quality, design patterns, and optimization opportunities, ensuring best practices are followed
  • Participate and contribute to team conversations around product, process, and best practices
  • Mentor and guide software engineers, sharing technical knowledge and promoting best practices in development processes
  • Support reliable production environments, including participating in an oncall rotation
  • Facilitate collaborative team activities, such as code pairing and group troubleshooting, to foster a productive and cohesive team environment
What you’ll need (basic qualifications)
  • 8+ years of production experience building accessible and performant web applications
  • Experience with Go
  • You have experience working with distributed systems, particularly on a cloud provider such as AWS, Azure or GCP, with a focus on scalability, resilience and security.
  • Balancing async and synchronous working styles. Understanding the value of written communication, but recognizing when having a synchronous conversation may be more valuable
  • Familiarity with infrastructure management concepts and/or Terraform. Experience building or interfacing with internal developer platforms/portals or other self service applications is a plus
  • Emerging ability to direct work and influence others, with a strategic approach to problem-solving and decision-making in a collaborative environment
  • Demonstrated business acumen and customer focus, with a readiness for change and adaptability in dynamic situations
  • Cloud-native mindset and solid understanding of DevOps principles in a cloud environment
  • Familiarity with cloud monitoring tools to implement robust observability practices that prioritize metrics, logging and tracing for high reliability and performance.
  • Intentional focus on stakeholder management and effective communication, fostering trust and relationship-building across diverse teams
  • Integrated skills in critical thinking and data-driven analysis, promoting a growth mindset and continuous improvement to support high-quality outcomes
What's nice to have (preferred qualifications)
  • You have experience using HashiCorp products (Terraform, Packer, Waypoint, Nomad, Vault, Boundary, Consul) or familiarity with infrastructure as code
  • You have prior experience working in cloud platform engineering teams
  • Experience building or interfacing with internal developer platforms/portals or other self service applications
  • Familiarity with GenAI or an interest in exploring their potential application to accelerate development and enhance productivity
  • Eastern/Central Time Zone location is preferred, but not required, to support team members across the US and Europe

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
