We’re seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join our team focused on building the foundational infrastructure and services behind Sony Pictures’ next-generation streaming platform. In this role, you’ll architect and develop highly scalable APIs, backend services, and system integrations that power core streaming features across multiple business models and user experiences.

This is a high-impact engineering position ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex systems problems, driving platform evolution, and helping scale streaming services to serve millions of users.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable, cloud-native backend services that support core streaming platform capabilities such as content management, metadata, playback, scheduling, entitlement, and more.
  • Build and optimize APIs that enable internal and external teams to deliver consistent, high-performance video experiences across platforms.
  • Collaborate closely with architects, DevOps, and product managers to design extensible service interfaces and system boundaries.
  • Contribute to service orchestration, data flow optimization, and performance tuning across a microservices-based architecture.
  • Integrate with a variety of internal systems and external services (e.g., CDN APIs, authentication, entitlement, SSAI, analytics).
  • Drive high standards for software quality, testability, observability, and deployment automation.
  • Participate in architecture reviews, design sessions, sprint planning, and technical mentoring.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 5+ years of experience developing backend systems or platform infrastructure in a production environment.
  • Proficiency in C#/.NET and working experience with Go or Python.
  • Solid understanding of API design, microservices architecture, and distributed systems patterns.
  • Experience with cloud-native development (preferably AWS) including services like Lambda, ECS, DynamoDB, SQS, and API Gateway.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD workflows, version control, and automated testing frameworks.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and an ability to navigate complex system interdependencies.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills; comfortable working across technical and non-technical teams.

Preferred:

  • Experience supporting video streaming platforms, especially backend systems related to playback, metadata, entitlement, or content pipelines.
  • Knowledge of advertising technologies such as SSAI, ad beacons, or video analytics (a plus, but not the focus of the role).
  • Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Splunk, CloudWatch, or Datadog.
  • Experience working with global teams, vendor partners, or hybrid delivery environments.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $120K to $170K. This role may also qualify for annual incentive and/or comprehensive benefits. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
