The role / impact
The Payments Platform organization is the engine that powers payments across all of Xero’s ecosystem. In this role, you will play a key role in reimagining the flow of money itself, building scalable systems that redefine how millions of small businesses move funds. This is a rare opportunity to join at an early stage, contributing directly to foundational systems that serve as a critical, multi-year investment in Xero's future.

The team / how they connect
This role sits within the Payments Platform organization. You will work in an agile, collaborative environment, partnering closely with Product, Security, Risk, and Operations teams to translate complex business needs into resilient technical solutions. As a Senior Engineer, you will help raise the technical bar within the team, modeling best practices and supporting the growth of junior engineers through mentorship and feedback.

The team are currently working on:

• Designing and building reliable, scalable, performant, and secure core services for the platform.

• Tackling challenging fintech problems including global payment rails, orchestration, compliance, and fraud designs.

• Working on distributed systems and global payment integrations to unlock new revenue streams.

• Championing operational excellence by contributing to on-call practices, observability, and monitoring.

Where and how you can work

This role is based in San Mateo, CA, with a hybrid setup as the preferred arrangement. However, we are equally open to remote talent across the US. Here are some of the things we are looking for in this role

• 6+ years of software engineering experience with a proven track record delivering highly available, distributed backend systems at scale.

• Strong expertise in system design, API development, and building reliable, high-throughput services.

• Proficiency in at least one modern backend stack (C# is a bonus, Java, Golang, C++) and experience with cloud-native platforms (AWS is a bonus).

• Experience mentoring junior engineers and driving technical design for complex projects.

• Familiarity with payments, fintech, or other highly regulated, compliance-heavy domains is preferred.
