Position Summary:

The primary purpose of the Senior Configuration Management Database (CMDB) Engineer role is to own and lead the strategy, governance, and continual improvement of automated discovery capabilities to ensure the CMDB remains accurate, complete, and reliable. This role is accountable for driving crossfunctional collaboration to achieve comprehensive visibility into the IT environment, while establishing standards, oversight, and optimization practices that preserve the integrity and value of CMDB data.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions: 

  • CMDB Architecture & Design  
    • Own and lead the CMDB data model strategy, including CI classes, relationships, and hierarchical service models (e.g., CSDM), ensuring alignment with ITSM, ITOM, and governance requirements.  
    • Establish and maintain standards for CI class usage, naming conventions, attributes, and relationship patterns across on-premises and cloud environments.  
    • Translate business and technical requirements into CMDB design artifacts, including models, diagrams, and documentation.  
    • Administer and maintain the enterprise CMDB platform (e.g., ServiceNow), including CI lifecycle standards (create, update, retire) and core configuration. 
  • Discovery, Integration & Automation  
    • Serve as the CMDB discovery subject matter expert, owning the standards, methodology, and optimization strategy for automated discovery tools across cloud, on-premises, and network environments, and guiding teams on schedules, probes, and patterns to ensure coverage and performance. 
    • Own CMDB Discovery operations, providing oversight of discovery job health, guiding troubleshooting of failures and data discrepancies, and leading the planning and coordination of discovery rollout waves with stakeholders. 
    • Define and implement integration patterns (APIs, imports, event-based updates) between the CMDB and external systems (monitoring, asset management, vulnerability management, cloud platforms, HR, security tools).  
    • Collaborate with platform and infrastructure teams on MID server / connector strategy, connectivity, and performance tuning for CMDB-related jobs.  
    • Create and maintain Service Mapping to accurately reflect business services and their dependencies on underlying CIs and infrastructure.  
    • Partner with DevOps teams to incorporate CI/CD and application visibility into the CMDB where appropriate. 
    • Recommend and implement automation opportunities that improve CMDB data currency, coverage, and operational efficiency.  
  • Data Quality, Governance & Compliance  
    • Ensure CI data accuracy and integrity by validating discovered data, eliminating duplicates, resolving discrepancies, and maintaining consistency across sources.  
    • Define and own CMDB data quality KPIs (e.g., completeness, accuracy, freshness, relationship integrity, reconciliation success) and implement controls to meet targets.  
    • Conduct regular data quality audits and remediation efforts, driving stabilization and ongoing improvement of the CMDB.  
    • Build and maintain dashboards and reports to monitor CMDB health, coverage, and quality trends; drive remediation initiatives with owning teams.  
    • Establish and enforce CMDB governance policies, standards, CI ownership and stewardship models, and CI lifecycle management processes.  
    • Support internal controls, audit, and regulatory/compliance requirements (e.g., SOX, PCI) related to CMDB data, discovery, and service mapping.  
  • Process Enablement & Partnership  
    • Align CMDB processes and data with Incident, Problem, Change, Request, and Event Management workflows to enable impact analysis and faster resolution.  
    • Provide SME guidance on using CMDB data in service maps, impact analysis, risk assessments, change planning, and CAB discussions.  
    • Work with architecture, infrastructure, application, cloud, security, and IT operations teams to onboard new technologies, services, and environments into the CMDB with appropriate CI models and relationships.  
    • Support incident, problem, and change activities related to CMDB issues; perform root cause analysis and drive permanent fixes for recurring data problems.  
  • Documentation, Training & Support  
    • Oversee and review CMDB-related work performed by junior engineers, analyst and contributing teams, ensuring quality, accuracy and compliance with established CMDB standards, models, and governance controls. 
    • Provide leadership, training, and guidance to technical teams, analyst and junior engineers on CMDB usage, CI modeling standards, data stewardship practices, and governance requirements to ensure consistent and effective adoption. 
    • Provide technical leadership for CMDB-related initiatives, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture, security, and operational priorities.  
    • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including CMDB data models, standards, governance guidelines, runbooks, architecture diagrams, integration specifications, and operational processes.  
    • Stay current with new ServiceNow and CMDB related features, tools, and methodologies, and leverage this knowledge to enhance CMDB, Discovery, and Service Mapping capabilities.  
    • Drive adoption of CMDB best practices across stakeholder teams and act as a subject matter expert for CMDB strategy and long-term maturity.  
    • Lead and mentor junior engineers and analysts contributing to CMDB, Discovery, and Service Mapping workstreams.  

Qualifications

Education: 

Minimum:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience) 

Preferred: 

  • ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist – Discovery or CMDB 
  • ServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA) certification. 

Experience 

Minimum:  

  • 7+ years of experience with IT discovery tools and CMDB platforms.  
  • 7+ years of experience with ServiceNow Discovery, ITSM, CMDB platform  
  • 7+ years of experience with Service Mapping, Scripting & Automation using JavaScript (for ServiceNow scripting) and PowerShell, Python, or Shell scripting (for custom probes/sensors or integrations)  

Preferred:  

  • Experienced with ITIL practices and ITSM tools. 
  • Experience in Agile project management methodologies.   

Skills & Abilities 

Minimum: 

  • Strong understanding of networking protocols (e.g., SNMP, WMI, SSH, HTTP/S). 
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V). 
  • Scripting experience (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash) for automation and troubleshooting.  
  • Strong design and engineering experience with ServiceNow CMDB, Discovery and Service Mapping implementation and optimization.  
  • Strong understanding of network topologies, firewalls, and subnets.
  • Application Integration REST/SOAP APIs and MID Server configuration and troubleshooting. 
  • Ability to create and modify Discovery probes, patterns, and sensors.  
  • Knowledge of Windows and Linux/Unix Servers, Network Appliances, Enterprise Applications, Databases, Web Servers, and Cloud platforms.  
  • Familiarity with various data sources for CMDB CI Ingestion (e.g., SCCM, Tanium, Intune, Discovery, Event Management, etc.), configuration and troubleshooting. 
  • Familiarity with Identification & Reconciliation (IRE) rules. 
  • Familiarity creating custom CI Classifications 
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders at all levels.  
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot complex data issues.   

Preferred: 

  • Prior experience with ServiceNow CMDB implementation and stabilization, Event Management and Performance Analytics.
