The Executive Underwriter is responsible for the strategic underwriting leadership of a complex primary casualty portfolio, driving profitable growth while ensuring disciplined risk selection aligned with enterprise objectives at Markel. This role operates with broad underwriting authority and serves as a subject matter expert, portfolio leader, and key partner to regional and national leadership. The Sr. Account Executive/Executive Underwriter influences underwriting strategy, product positioning, and market direction, while mentoring underwriting talent and contributing to initiatives with significant business impact.

Key Responsibilities – What You’ll Be Doing

  • Provide executive-level underwriting leadership for complex and high‑exposure primary casualty risks, exercising advanced authority and independent judgment to achieve sustained underwriting profitability.
  • Own and actively manage a strategically significant portfolio, including oversight of new business acquisition and renewal strategy, ensuring performance aligns with profitability and growth expectations.
  • Set underwriting direction within assigned territory and producer relationships, identifying trends, emerging risks, and corrective actions to optimize portfolio results.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to regional leaders and primary casualty product line leadership, providing insight and recommendations related to underwriting strategy, producer management, operational improvements, and market opportunities.
  • Lead and participate in underwriting audits, peer reviews, and governance forums, ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines, authority standards, and regulatory requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Build, strengthen, and selectively expand high‑value producer relationships while maintaining oversight of the broader appointed producer base to ensure alignment with long‑term profitability objectives.
  • Analyze competitive products, pricing, and coverage approaches to inform product positioning and effectively represent the Markel value proposition in the marketplace.
  • Act as a technical leader and mentor by providing coaching, training, and guidance to underwriting peers and support staff, contributing to talent development and succession planning.
  • Support and lead special projects and cross‑functional initiatives that influence underwriting performance, operational efficiency, or strategic growth priorities.

Qualifications – What We’re Looking For

  • Extensive experience underwriting Primary Casualty business, including complex risks and portfolios within the Western United States.
  • Demonstrated progression of underwriting authority with deep technical expertise, strong risk assessment capabilities, and consistent delivery of profitable results.
  • Proven ability to lead portfolio strategy, influence stakeholders, and operate effectively in a senior, consultative capacity.
  • Strong marketing, negotiation, and relationship‑management skills with established credibility among producers and internal partners.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; advanced designations such as CPCU or equivalent strongly preferred.
  • Excellent executive‑level written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex underwriting concepts clearly and persuasively.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, with strong analytical, organizational, and decision‑making skills.
  • Collaborative leader who thrives in a dynamic, evolving business environment and demonstrates a strong commitment to results and continuous improvement.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% as business needs require.

Pay information:

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The base salary range for the Sr. Account Executive position is $116k - $159k/year with a 30% bonus potential.
