Who we are

Subtotal is a fast-growing, seed-stage startup connecting shoppers, brands, and retailers. Our platform lets shoppers link their retail accounts (Amazon, Walmart, Target, and more) and share their purchases with the brands they buy from, so those brands can finally see what their customers are buying across retail.

We're early, building fast, and looking for a Software Engineering Intern who wants to work across a wide range of areas and learn from great engineers tackling novel problems.

The role

This is a hands-on engineering role on a small team that ships often. You'll build real product alongside our engineers and founders. That includes integrations with major retailers and other software providers, internal systems that automate everyday work, and apps shoppers and brands use directly. Your priorities and the tools you use will change frequently, and we want someone who's energized by that.

What you'll do
  • Build autonomous systems: Design and ship systems that handle routine work on their own, like keeping shoppers' retail connections healthy.

  • Bring in new technology: Keep a pulse on new tools, models, and techniques as they come out, and figure out where they give us an edge.

  • Own projects end to end: Take a problem from rough idea to production, then keep improving it based on what you learn.

What we're looking for
  • Above all, a real eagerness to learn: you love picking up new skills and want to get better every week

  • Currently pursuing a degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field

  • Excitement about building autonomous systems that work without hand-holding

  • A habit of trying new tools as soon as they come out and figuring out how to put them to use

  • A preference for shipping and iterating over planning in the abstract

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the judgment to know when something is ready to ship

  • Hungry, self-directed, and comfortable with ambiguity

Nice to have
  • Experience with APIs, data pipelines, or third-party integrations

  • Experience building agents

  • Interest in commerce, retail, or marketing tech

Details
  • Hours: Full or part time

  • Location: Primarily remote with regular in-person onsites. We may move to a hybrid model in the near term. Preference for candidates in New York City or Utah.

What we offer
  • $20-$30/hr

  • Real ownership over work that ships to production

  • Direct mentorship from our engineers and founders

  • A small, low-ego team

If you're eager to learn from great engineers and see your work ship, we'd love to hear from you.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
