Who we are:

Here at X, our mission is to revolutionize how people connect, share ideas, and engage in meaningful conversations. We champion freedom of speech and strive to create a platform that embraces diverse perspectives. Our commitment is to foster open dialogue and empower individuals to express themselves freely.

The Applied Safety team ensures that users abide by X’s Terms of Service by detecting and remediating violative content at scale. Using machine learning and other signals, we identify threats and build automated systems to remediate misconduct with proportionate and transparent responses. We aim to eliminate illegal and inauthentic behavior on X and protect users from harassment or unwanted sensitive content.

We are a fast-moving team that operates more like a startup than a large tech company. This role is a good fit for someone who values impact and is willing to unblock themselves to get the work done.

We value:

  • Writing code rather than documents

  • Shipping products rather than talking about roadmaps

  • Big features rather than changing button colors

What you’ll do:

  • Work across the stack or dive deep into ML to deliver step-wise improvements to our abuse, spam, financial fraud, child safety, and/or tooling systems

  • Architect and deliver new systems with a high degree of autonomy

  • Produce scalable systems capable of handling thousands of events per second

  • Apply creative problem solving cross-functionally across the entire safety ecosystem, whether it’s through engineering, product, or operations

  • Code using primarily Scala; Map-Reduce frameworks such as Scalding; and scripting languages such as Python

  • Potential for technical leadership in payments risk/financial fraud, child safety, or abuse

Qualifications

  • 3+ years working in software engineering or machine learning engineering roles

  • Proven experience building and operating software services at scale

  • Experience and familiarity with the modern data pipeline and ML infrastructure ecosystem

  • Enjoy working in a 0-to-1 space with no known machine learning, engineering, or product solutions, and trailblazing to build novel solutions that work

Preferred qualifications:

  • Prior experience in Trust and Safety

  • Fluent in one or more of Java, Scala, Python, or SQL

  • Familiarity with machine learning

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
