The San Francisco Standard is seeking a Summer 2026 social media intern to create engaging content across all of our channels. As an intern, you will adapt stories from the newsroom to run on our social channels as well as find or create platform-native posts that suit our voice and audience . The successful candidate will identify unique ways to showcase our reporting and to highlight San Francisco. Our social interns relish not only being chronically online but also getting out of the office and capturing what’s happening in the city. This position is ideal for a motivated self-starter who loves the thrill of sharing stories and engaging with readers.

We are looking for interns who have at least one prior internship in a professional newsroom or on a social or marketing team and come with strong recommendations from references familiar with their skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the creation and optimization of content for Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, TikTok, and other platforms, including writing caption copy, creating graphics, and editing videos.
  • Brainstorm and pitch ideas for social-first content and execute on them with the team
  • Edit quick-turnaround social videos
  • Track breaking news and trending topics
  • Monitor performance and analytics across social channels
  • Capture photos and videos at shoots and events as needed

Requirements

  • Proven ability to write quickly, cleanly, and accurately under deadline pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor social media and other news outlets, making the most out of available technology to find stories that will resonate with our audience
  • Experience using Instagram, TikTok, X/Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms
  • Experience creating videos for social media
  • Excellent verbal communication and collaboration skills
  • Willingness to learn and take constructive feedback
  • Knowledge of AP style
  • Willingness to work at least one weekend day and/or night shifts as required
  • Enthusiasm for bringing fresh ideas to the way we cover news, making the best of emerging technologies, and experimenting with new ways we can attract a larger audience, in keeping with the spirit of The Standard’s innovative newsroom
  • A sense of humor and passion for all things social

This is an in-office position in our San Francisco office, with occasional remote work depending on the days/times of your shifts. Start date is flexible, May/June, 2026.

This internship pays $25 per hour, and may be part-time or full-time.

To apply for this position, please submit your resume along with 3 to 5 work samples, a cover letter and contact information for at least two references. In your cover letter, pitch two social story ideas you’d be interested in pursuing as an intern—no subject matter is off limits, as long as it has some connection to San Francisco. Your cover letter should also detail when you are available to start working, and what days and times you are regularly available for work.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
