Forbes is currently seeking an experienced reporter to lead our coverage of artificial intelligence on its award winning technology and innovation desk. We’re looking for someone who is fluent in enterprise reporting and profiles, gets excited about scoops and investigations and loves chasing down tips. The ideal candidate is interested in following the money, identifying great entrepreneurs as they’re on the cusp of breaking out, and covering the inevitable failures and flops when startups blow up. We’re on the cusp of incredible change or awash in incredible hype, depending who you ask, and this reporter’s role would be to sort through the fluff to find and elevate entrepreneurs building the next Facebook or Google — and hold them accountable along the way. This reporter should have a great nose for news, a deep understanding of the tech undergirding AI and have a demonstrated facility for explaining it to humans. Our desk is a highly ambitious one, and successful candidates will share that drive and passion.

Responsibilities:

  • Pitch, report and write must-read stories about artificial intelligence companies and entrepreneurs
  • Regularly break news, including exclusives, funding scoops and investigations
  • Conceive and report features for the website and magazine, including pitching profiles and cover stories
  • Participate in the reporting of AI 50 and contribute to other Forbes lists
  • Represent Forbes at live events and conferences
  • Participate in Forbes videos related to reporting

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of journalism experience
  • Strong writer who communicates effectively and clearly with a strong point of view that stands out
  • Well sourced in the AI community with a proven track record for turning tips into stories
  • Versed in the technical side of AI, as well as the finance of startup fundraising, and able to hold their own with researchers and investors alike
  • Team player and happy collaborator who is willing to crash out a quick hit, dive into an investigation and go in-depth for a print profile, as need requires
  • Overflowing with story ideas drawn from sourcing, sharp observation and on-the-ground reporting
  • Comfortable working remotely

The annual base salary range for this role is $120,000 - $150,000

Forbes has estimated the compensation range set forth above in good faith.  The compensation range is what we believe we will offer, and ultimately pay, a successful candidate.  In determining this range, we consider the experience, level of education (if applicable to the role), knowledge, skills, and abilities required to be had by a successful candidate as well as the budget and the company’s pay rates, generally. This said, we may have to make changes to our compensation estimates and job descriptions from time to time and we expressly reserve the right to do so.  Should we make any such changes, this advertisement will be revised to reflect such revisions.  We encourage you to occasionally re-visit this advertisement to ensure that you are abreast of any changes.  Thank you for your interest in joining Forbes!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
